The pen without ink in business management

Business RSS Feed

The models of corporate governance are diverse, we find centralized, decentralized, participatory, non-participatory, dictatorial, democratic, tolerant, intolerant, reflecting the company's culture and profile of the leaders and the managers.

The model may be responsible for periods of instability to hold talents, due to this the company can face a high staff turnover.

In some ads offering jobs we’ll find indication of the company culture, as working under pressure, ability to lead groups, independence of decision, so, the list is varied, but none ads that says prepared to deal with frustrations. One of the most difficult aspect in the management process is to manage with a pen without ink.

When a talented and experienced professional is hired the freedom of action is theoretical, the restriction will only appear when the impact measures and effective action need to be taken.

Professionals can gather information, assemble teams to debate, formulate the plan of action, establish measures and procedures, but can not implement them where there is such a restriction.

Two situations can be observed:
1) The implementation action of the procedures is barred before their release;
2) By decree the measures implemented are suspended.

In the first case there is frustration, but negotiation is possible, since this affects a small group of people and there isn’t a observation of the lack of autonomy of the professional who leads the group in this study.

In the second case it is clear the lack of autonomy and that no authority was delegated at all.

Situations like this lead to a general discouragement and loss of confidence, and often when ideas are presented people react negatively with words like " we have ever recommend," "we tried to do," "this worked that ", " here this does not work," and problems remains without an adequate treatment unless they are observed by the main manager. This experience develops and strengthens the culture of "please, do not involve me” or “let me out of it”.

We've have already managed complex situations, one of the most difficult was when people refused, outside the meetings, talking about problems, solutions and procedures.

When asked why, the answer was a single, objective: "Nobody will be able to implement anything and if the problem gets worse they will say that I knew, so let me out." The joke "include me out of it," had taken serious proportions.

The company was showing low retention of talent, high turnover, enormous cost of hiring and firing of managers weren’t accepting the facts.

We’ll find people who accept to risk according a reward, otherwise show no disposition, but also many people willing to engage in complex issues due to a sense of responsibility, courage and dedication to what he does, asking only for freedom to act .

Nothing is more frustrating to those dedicated and committed people than to receive pen ink without ink, the chances of such professional relationship lasting are minimum.

You can have in your company the management model you want, but do not complain about being overwhelmed.

An interesting alternative is to hire competent professionals to delegate and give them new pens at full load.
