Balance Your Blood Sugar Whether You Have Diabetes Or Not
By Joshua Yamson

When blood sugar (glucose) is discussed, it is often related to diabetes. So most people don't even pay attention to their blood sugar level unless they are a diabetic. Yet 7% of Americans (20.8 million in which 6.2 are undiagnosed) have diabetes. The diabetes syndrome is the result of people constantly flooding their bloodstream with high levels of sugar, which causes the pancreas to release (secrete) high levels of insulin.

This forces insulin to get this excess sugar out of the bloodstream, convert it to fat and store it in fat cells. The bad thing is that by daily adding fat cells they become toxic and slow down the body's ability to burn fat. This causes blood sugar to continually rise and fouls up the pancreas' ability to secrete natural insulin. The result is that insulin becomes less efficient at processing blood sugar and starts resisting its job (insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes -which by the way can be reversed).

Whether you are a diabetic or not, one of the most important factors in feeding your body is to make sure that the foods you eat do not cause your blood sugar to skyrocket! Yet this is one of the most overlooked factors in weight lose diet plans, or eating in general.

So let me explain what should happen when glucose enters your blood stream. First of all, glucose comes from eating carbohydrates. The best sources of these sugars come from fruits and vegetables. These are natural fructose sugars. The problem comes when you eat high-sugar man-made foods such as candies, soft drinks, breads, processed meats, pastries, condiments, etc. These are called sucrose from granulated sugar or dangerous artificial sugar substitutes (another article).

They cause your blood sugar level to IMMEDIATELY skyrocket mostly because they enter straight into the blood stream and bypass the inspection or permission of the liver. These foods are digested quickly, flooding your bloodstream with too much sugar (glucose). So whatever glucose that is not immediately burned for energy, insulin rushes in quickly and starts storing this excess sugar as FAT in your fat cells. Soon your blood sugar begins to drop, and it's not long before you are hungry again!

The solution to keeping your blood sugar level is to eat carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans, which digest more slowly. Your sugar rises only incrementally, and slow digestion means that glucose is available as energy for hours and hours. This means you have hours to burn off the blood sugar. Insulin doesn't need to rush in to turn the sugar into fat. It can use the sugar slowly for other projects such as building and repairing muscles, replenishing and regenerating your cells, and operating your immune system. Plus because your blood sugar level stays even, and excess sugar does not have to be stored as fat, you don't get ravenously hungry just a few hours after eating. You build muscle, store less fat, have more energy, and keep your appetite under control... the keys to weight loss!

The added bonus is that many carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans - help protect you against cancer and other dis-eases, and some carbohydrates contain nutrients such as fiber, which also help you lose and control weight, and remove waste from your colon. It is important to get the right carbohydrates prepared without depleting them of enzymes and added sugars.
