Running to lose weight-will also help the heart

Weight RSS Feed

Pretty much anywhere you live, pretty much anytime of year you can see people on the sidewalks and in the parks running to lose weight or just to stay in good shape. Running and jogging have long been a popular method to keep the cardiovascular system strong and the excess pounds to a minimum.

Running to lose weight is popular and effective for many people, but it's not for everyone and even if it were for you, you do need to ease into it. Of course, before you start any diet or exercise routine make sure you talk with your doctor and make sure you have her okay.

Also, don't forget that losing weight entails more than just exercise, you need to watch what you eat; the amount of food you eat as well as what you eat and how often you eat. It's also important to set realistic goals and a realistic time frame.

Losing weight does take time, don't expect it to happen overnight. You will also need to be willing to work up your running times slowly. It takes time to build up your strength and endurance so don't get impatient. The more you run, the longer you will be able to run. Longer in both time and distance (as you get in better shape you will be running faster which means you can run longer distances in the same amount of time).

Finding good quality footwear is vitally important. Today, many runners prefer a more natural feel and are opting for some lighter weight footwear and even the type of footwear where it looks like you are wearing gloves on your feet, you know, the footwear that all your toes are separated. Whatever type of footwear you choose, make sure it is fitted properly.

Remember too that your body adapts very quickly and it won't take it long to get used to your running routine. When that happens you won't get as big of a benefit as you did when you first started. In order to keep your workouts challenging you need to constantly be "upping" the intensity. You can do that in a variety of ways: you can run further, faster, run up hills, add ankle weights, etc.

You can also use interval training to keep your workouts as challenging as possible. Just by running for a few minutes and getting your heart rate up, you can then alternate with walking for a few minutes and lowering your heart rate back down... not to resting levels but lower than it was when you were running.

Continuing to do that will help you keep your body guessing which will really help prevent you from falling into the trap of reaching a plateau.

Running to lose weight can be very effective but remember it's not without it's risks. You must learn to properly stretch before and after your run as well as finding quality footwear. Try to run on softer surfaces so you lessen the impact on your joints, especially your knees. And last but not least, always talk to your doctor first to make sure it's okay to run.
