Jaw pain in women-more prevalent because of hormonal changes

Health RSS Feed

The jaw is a very highly used joint in the body. Think about it, every time you talk, chew or swallow you are using this joint. Jaw pain in women is particularly rampant and it can cause pain not just in the jaw but in the ears, neck and shoulder as well.

There are a lot of remedies you can use to help get some relief from this intense pain (I'm not a doctor and I can't give out medical advice. These remedies are only a suggestion, always talk to your doctor before you take any type of supplement):

1. Jaw pain in women is more prevalent in part because of all the hormonal changes that a women goes through throughout her life. The tissues can swell around the jaw which can in turn cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. Some women have gotten relief by taking 1,000 mg of Omega 3. Omegas 3 has anti - inflammatory properties which can help lessen the swelling and may be able to provide some relief.

2. Sometimes taking a hot shower can offer some relief. The hot water can increase your blood flow which can help you relax. Clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth at night can cause a lot of pain so anything you can do to relax may be able to offer you some relief.

3. There are also some exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles of the jaw area. Exercising these muscles on a regular basis can help keep them strong and prevent cramping. Ask your dentist for some exercises that you can do. More often than not, they will tell you to do the exercises twice daily once in the morning and once before bed.

4. It might be hard, trust me I know, but stay away from all the goodies that are chewy. That will just force you to use your jaw even more. That is the last thing you want to do if you are suffering from jaw pain. Eating soft, non chewy foods will be much less painful for you in the long run (even if it isn't as much fun!).

5. Another thing you can do to help keep you from doing more damage overnight, is to get a bite plate for your mouth. Your dentist can fashion a custom made one for you that will fit your mouth exactly. He will actually make it after taking a mold of your teeth. This can keep you from grinding or clenching your teeth overnight. Not only can this help protect your teeth, it can also keep the impact on your jaw to a minimum.

It's no fun but Jaw pain in women is all too common of a problem. There are some simple, and not so simple, things you can do to help keep it from flaring up or to help alleviate the pain when it does flare up. Ultimately, your doctor or dentist can help you find the best solution for your pain.
