Healthy eating program and proper nutrition

Diet RSS Feed

If you are interested in starting a healthy eating program, then you should invest a bit of time in learning about proper nutrition and health. Even if you are not thinking about losing weight but just want to see an overall improvement in your health, then it only makes sense that you should know how your body uses the food you eat. Such information will make choosing healthy food easier, and help you to avoid foods that only claim to be healthy.

A truly healthy eating program needs to give you a lot more than the right balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat. However, that balance still needs to be there, otherwise the plan isn't likely to be as healthy as it claims.

Generally speaking, you should look for a plan that has no more than 30% of its calories coming from fat, and a focus on minimizing bad fats. Trans fats and saturated fats are the least healthy, while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated are considered to be the healthy fats. You still need to limit your intake of overall fat, though.

Protein on a healthy eating program should be comprised of good sources, such as yogurt and low-fat dairy, beans and other legumes, turkey, fish and sparing use of lean cuts of meat. Many foods that contain protein also contain fat, so be sure to pay attention to what kind of fat they have.

Carbohydrates should come from whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. You should do your best to avoid refined, simple carbohydrates such as sugar, white flour and white rice. The body digests simple carbs much more quickly and this has a negative impact on blood sugar levels. Complex carbs, however, digest more slowly and also tend to be higher in a variety of nutrients, including fiber.

You need to be alert for wild claims made by various plans. For example, there is a still-popular diet that severely restricts how many carbohydrates you can eat, but it lets you eat practically all of the protein and fat you want. While this may have a short-term effect, there are two main problems with any so-called "healthy eating program" that doesn't include a wide variety of foods. First, your body needs a lot of different nutrients, and it can only get them when you have a lot of variety in your diet. Second, while you may be able to stick with a restrictive diet for a while; you will eventually start to have strong cravings, and that means a high risk of going off the program.

It may sound obvious, but you also need to do your best to stop eating unhealthy foods when following a healthy eating program. A lot of people think they can eat some junk food as long as they "make up for it" by eating better the rest of the day. That sounds good, but that's not how it works. But that's okay because there is so much tasty and healthy food out there that it doesn't have to be a problem.
