It seems as though nearly everybody you run into has tips on losing weight to share with you. While a few may be solid tips that really work, far too many are bizarre or even dangerous. The funny thing is that the ones who are the quickest to give advice are always the people who can't seem to lose the weight and keep it off. That should tell you two things: One, that their advice many not be all that great. Two, that even overweight people have some idea about how to lose weight. Keeping all of this in mind, here are some weight loss tips that have been proven to be effective.

Use smaller dishes. Okay, okay, I know this sounds rather silly, and you be rolling your eyes right now...but this tip really works by convincing your brain that you are eating more than you really are. The reasoning behind it is that our brains look at the size of surrounding objects to determine the size of whatever we're looking at. Therefore, the same amount of food will look like much more on a smaller plate, than it will on a larger plate. But really, who cares how it works? What counts is that this mental trick can help you to shed some excess pounds.

Slow down your eating. This is one of the most effective tips on losing weight. Imagine you're watching an eating contest. The participants have one minute in which to eat as many hot dogs as they can. They shovel them in very quickly and the champions can eat dozens of hot dogs in less than a minute! How? Because they eat so fast that their brains don't have enough time to get the signal that the stomach is full. This allows the competitive eater to ingest much more than they ever could if they were to slow down. You can use this knowledge to your advantage. When you eat slower, you give your brain and stomach enough time to tell you that you're full; allowing you to feel satisfied and eat less at the same time.

Keep your portions in check. This is one of the tips for losing weight that requires you to be disciplined--there are no mind tricks here. Instead of grabbing two large breasts of chicken, grab one medium sized breast instead. Instead of having three slices of pizza, have one. The real "secret" to portion control is to not put as much food on your plate; that way you won't be tempted to eat more. You can start with really small portions, then go back for a second helping if you're still hungry (remember to slow down, though).

These tips on losing weight will go a long way to helping you get in shape, but they are only the start. The more tips and tricks you can use to fight the battle of the bulge, the more likely you will be to not only lose weight, but to keep it off for good.
