More and more people today are coming to realize that what our mom's thought was the best way to lose weight, starving themselves, is actually about the worst thing you can do. Today we understand that it's about keeping our body fed and keeping our metabolism burning hot, that will help us lose weight. The neat thing is that there are actually foods to eat to lose weight.

So, it's about eating smarter. Eating the right foods, in the right combination and portion size and often enough throughout your day can make a ton of difference. Finding the right foods to eat to lose weight is actually pretty easy to do with just a little knowledge, and I'll help you get that knowledge:

1. Keep your diet balanced, that means a lot of lean protein, a little fat and some carbohydrates (yes, you do need some fats and it would be almost impossible to completely eliminate fats from your diet anyway).

2. Eat more often throughout the day. You don't want to just eat 3 big meals every day. Eating every few hours throughout the day is the best way to keep your metabolism burning hot which burns more calories.

3. Eggs are a great source of protein and can keep you feeling full long after you've eaten them. The only "downside" about eating eggs is that the yolks are high in cholesterol. A good way to get the protein without overdoing it on the cholesterol is to eat egg whites, just separate the yolks out. I know that this may sound gross, it did to me the first time I heard it, but if you are making scrambled eggs, just add one whole egg to two egg whites. That way you won't get too much cholesterol but your eggs will have more flavor and look more appealing too.

4. There are many variety of nuts and seeds that can provide a lot of protein without a lot of fat. Some of the best are almonds, pistachios and sunflower seeds, these are some of your best choices.

5. Berries are another great food you can add to your daily menu (I know it sounds weird talking about nuts and berries!). There are many types of berries that you can add to your yogurt, oatmeal or even in a salad (cranberries anyone?).

6. Green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. They are also very low in calories and can fill you up and keep you feeling full for a long time. If you don't care for the taste of broccoli you can add some low fat cheese sauce or low fat dressing.

7. Make sure you drink plenty of water. I know that water isn't really a food, but many people in our society don't drink enough water. If your urine is really yellow that is a sign that you are dehydrated. If you actually feel thirsty, that is another sign that you are dehydrated. You should drink enough throughout the day so that you never feel thirst, by the time you feel the thirst you are already dehydrated.
