Customer service job interview advice

Business plan RSS Feed

A customer service job interview is a lot more tricky in a lot of ways than many other types of interviews. For this interview you will have to show the interviewer that you are able to stay calm in difficult situations and that you will put the customer's needs at the top of the list.

If you have been employed as a customer service representative in the past you can expect a lot of specific questions about the way you would handle a disgruntled customer. You will be required to give specific examples of what you did, and didn't do, and how you helped solve the customers issues.

If you've never had this type of job before it will be up to you to convince the interviewer that you will be able to handle the stress of dealing with ticked off customers day in and day out. You will no doubt be asked to provide instances in your own life where you've had to deal with someone who was irate, and stay calm doing it.

Before your interview try to think of several real world times when you've had to solve a problem of someone who was difficult to work with. This type of situation can arise between co-workers in pretty much any type of job.

You may have also had to deal with it if you've ever been involved in team sports or at another job with customers (dealing with unhappy customers can happen in many types of jobs, not just customer service positions).

Being able to show the interviewer that you can think on your feet and don't get easily flustered is another great point in your favor. Ultimately the vast majority of people who contact a customer service line are going to have a problem. They are also going to be at some degree of unhappiness.

It's not always easy to convince an interviewer that you really care about turning an unhappy customer into a happy and satisfied customer. If you have real world examples you can provide it will be easier, but if you've never worked in the field before you'll need to delve a little deeper and find situations where you were the problem solver and able to keep your cool.

If you've ever attended any type of training workshops or seminars that were centered around team building or problem solving, even if it wasn't related to your job, than you need to tell the interviewer. Anything that will showcase the fact that you've had some experience in helping people solve issues even if it wasn't directly related to a customer service position can help you get the job.

Of course, being able to speak clearly and make eye contact with the interviewer is also going to help. Don't go in to your interview with a mouth full of gum. Don't look around the room as if you're bored and don't mumble. Speak clearly and intelligently. Provide direct answers to the questions you are asked.

A customer service job interview can be more challenging than other types of interviews if you don't have previous experience. It's not easy to prove that you can do such a demanding job well if you've never done it before. Try to find as many examples of problem solving in other areas of your life to prove that you are able to help out an irate customer.
