Best job interview questions - your questions can sell you

Career RSS Feed

The best job interview questions are the ones that will show the interviewer that you are intelligent, qualified and that you've done your homework. Going to an interview with such a preparedness makes it possible for the interviewer to see you as a valuable member of the team and can really help you land that dream job.

Of course, the exact questions you ask will be determined on the type of industry your job is in as well as specifics about the company, but there are some general questions that you can ask (or tailor to your job) that will show that you are a serious candidate for the job opening.

Here are some questions to consider asking:

1. What are the opportunities for advancement in this company (for my position)?

This shows the interviewer that you are hungry and that you are planning on working hard and sticking around... if the opportunities are there. That is exactly the types of qualities they want to find in an employee and will really help you stay on the short list for the job opening.

2. What is the process for job training and how long does it take?

This allows the interviewer to see you as someone who is thinking ahead and is ready and anxious to get started. The fact that you want to know what is going to happen shows that you are serious and have given your new position a lot of thought.

3. Does the company provide any programs for advancement (such as compensation for further education, etc.)?

Again, asking this question lets the interviewer know that you'd just as soon stick around for the long haul as long as you are allowed to grow and make head way. No one wants to stagnate and this is your way of letting them know that at some point you'll want more. For most companies that will be music to their ears.

4. Ask the interviewer what is the best quality of the company? What sets this company apart from others in the field in terms of employee satisfaction?

Asking this directly of the interviewer is likely to be something they will be flattered by. Most people like to be asked for their opinion. Trying to find out just what this company has to offer its employees will also allow you to delve deeper into what the company can offer you, more than you could learn just searching online for information.

5. What type of bonus programs does the company offer and what do you have to do to qualify for them?

This again shows the interviewer that you are willing to work hard, as long as you will get some sort of compensation and recognition. That is the type of person they are looking for. Bonuses were set up to reward just such a worker.

The best job interview questions are those which show the interviewer that you're very interested in and qualified for the job you are interviewing for. Let them know that you want the job and that they'd be lucky to have you and your chances of getting it are going to improve.
