Questions for job interview - dont be intimidated

Career RSS Feed

Going to a job interview can be intimidating enough, but in today's economic climate it can be downright terrifying. It's not like times in the past when you had multiple interviews lined up and of course you wanted to do well, but knowing you had other options took some of the pressure off. Today it pays to be prepared and knowing what questions for job interview to be prepared for can help a lot.

Of course, many of the questions will be targeted on your experience and qualifications for the particular job you are applying for. Having said that though, there are some questions that are kind of 'universal' and that are almost always asked. Having a good, honest answer ready can really make you stand out from others.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions in a job interview:

1. What would your former boss consider to be your strengths and weaknesses?

Make sure that you are honest, if you know that you were late to work a lot, you should be prepared for your old boss to mention that. But, for now, you want to concentrate on the positives. What did you do exceptionally well at your old job?

Point those out. It also makes you appear to be honest if you mention some negatives about your past work, go lightly here because you don't want to scare off the new boss, but still be honest.

Let's say, for example, that you were late a lot. You can tell the interviewer about this, after you've listed a lot of positives, but you can put your own spin on it. You might tell the interviewer that you were late because you didn't have good transportation, but now you have a new car.

2. If you could choose any company in this industry to work in, what would it be?

Of course a little sucking up can go a long way, so tell the interviewer that you would choose his company first and tell him why.

After that mention some other companies in your field. This shows that you have knowledge of the competitors in your field which can make a good impression.

3. What salary are you looking for?

This can be a tricky question. If possible, don't provide a specific number, you don't want to lock yourself into an amount which may be lower than they were prepared to offer. Instead say something like: "Given my experience I would expect higher than the average salary for this position"

Just to be on the safe side, do your homework first and find out what people in your area and with your experience are getting for this position, than go a little above that.

4. What can you bring to the table if we hire you?

Again, it's good to do your homework. While it might be tough to come up with a specific answer since you don't know how this company 'works' you could come up with a general answer such as: "at my last position I was able to (list a few specific accomplishments) and I will bring the same skill and dedication to this company".

5. Do you have a problem with taking a drug screening or emotional evaluation?

Of course, you want to answer immediately and say yes. If you hem and haw the interviewer might view that as a sign that you have something to hide.

Use these questions for job interview as a guide to help prepare you, Good luck!
