Answers to Job Interview Questions - Be Prepared

One of the best things you can do to greatly increase your chances of getting hired when you go into a job interview is to be prepared. Spend a few days prior to your interview and find out more about the company as well as the answers to job interview questions you'll likely be asked.

This preparation will help you in several ways. For one thing, you'll be more relaxed (at least a little bit) if you know you're prepared. By taking the time to figure out how best to answer the questions as well as what questions you want to ask, you won't feel so off balance as you would if you went in cold.

Another benefit is that you will impress the interviewer. If you answer the questions you are asked honestly and intelligently you will stand apart. They will also be impressed if you ask them some well thought out questions. This lets them know you are serious and a good applicant.

The exact questions you will be asked will vary a little bit from one industry to another, but the basics are almost always the same. Here are some ideas of what basic questions you'll likely be asked during your interview:

1. "How do you think your previous employer would describe your work habits and your strengths and weaknesses?"

Of course, you want to be honest because it's very likely that your old boss will be contacted. On the other hand, it's unlikely that your old boss will really 'trash' you for fear of being sued so you may have a little wiggle room in the way you answer.

First play up all the positives you can think of. Then list a few of the negatives that you know may come to light. Try to offer reasonable explanations for any negatives. For example, if you missed a lot of work you may be able to explain that you had an illness (or issue) that has since been resolved so you won't need to miss any work.

2. "Out of all the companies in this industry, why do you want to work with us?"

Again, this is where your homework will pay off big. If you've found that the company you're applying with offers great advancement opportunities or that they have a very employee friendly work environment, now is the time to say so.

3. "What is your desired salary for the position you are applying for?"

Talking money is a tricky proposition. You don't want to low ball yourself and you don't want your salary expectations to be so high that they think you're either out of your mind or out of their price range. Find out what others in the company with your experience level are making if you can.

Otherwise find out what people in that industry, and in that geographic location are making with the same level of experience. Than go just a little over that average, after all, you're worth it and that will give you some negotiating room.

Some other points: be prepared to answer the questions: what will you bring to our company, where do you see yourself in 5 years, what sets you apart from other candidates?

Come up with honest answers to job interview questions as well as some questions for the interviewer and you will set yourself apart from a lot of the other applicants.
