Writing tips RSS Feed

If you are faced with writing and completing a dissertation or thesis over 10000 words then you know what I am talking about, it seems like climbing a mountain. The way to gain confidence and conquer your fears of tackling what is most probably one of the most difficult pieces of academic work that you will ever complete, is to follow a tried and tested approach to writing your dissertation, used and developed by academics.
Firstly it needs a planning stage, followed by a literature review, then an outline needs to be developed, a first draft needs to be completed, then further development and then the final draft. It sounds easy so far doesn’t it?
All of the stages mentioned above make for a writing and completing a great dissertation, so careful attention must be made to each stage. So before you start with the planning stage of the thesis, you just need to make sure that you have preliminaries sorted out first.
Ask yourself the following questions first:-

- What are the requirements of your dissertation? Have you got your University requirements in document form? Have you read the requirements carefully?
- What is the type of dissertation that the University wants from you? Can you use the advice and help of your lecturers? Does the work need to be on a particular subject or are you free to carry out your own unique research?
- Is there a marking scheme for the dissertation that you can get your hands on?
- What is the actual word limit for the dissertation? And don’t forget to find out what is excluded and what is included in the word limit?
- What referencing system do you have to use? What is the layout process?
- Where does the dissertation need to be handed into? When is the deadline? What is the handing in process?
