Weight loss medications-leave it to your physician

Weight RSS Feed

Only your doctor and you can have the final say which weight loss medications may be right for you. That being said, it's very important for you to take time to look into your various options, and to educate yourself about these types of medicines. At the very least, you should compare several medications, investigate their history, read what others have said about it, and see what the potential side effects are (both serious and minor ones). You should also think about the possibility of losing weight without having to resort to medication.

Chances are that you're contemplating weight loss medications at this point because your previous attempts to shed pounds fell short of the mark. Maybe you feel like you've tried virtually every diet and exercise plan that has ever been created, all to no avail. Sure, there were times you were able to take some weight off, but then you gained all of it back, or maybe even more. Then there were maybe a few questionable things you tried; such as extreme exercise regimens, starvation diets, or popping pills that you didn't get from a doctor.

If any of the above sounds familiar, it's okay. There is no need to feel guilty about it. You were doing what you thought was right, and you were trying your best to lose weight. There's nothing wrong with that. You may feel as though there are no more options left, and it would just be easier to stay overweight. But that's the only wrong option. Promise yourself that you will only lose weight in a safe and healthy way from this point forward.

The promise to be safe and healthy also includes any weight loss medications your doctor may want you to try. Not all medicines are created equal, and not all of them work the same way in everybody who takes them. That's why it's so important to educate yourself before you discuss various options with your doctor.

Let's be honest, doctors are highly trained people, but they are also human and can make mistakes. The other potential problem is that they may be relying too heavily on literature provided to them by the drug companies. In the past there have been a few weight loss medications that were eventually pulled from the market because of the harmful side effects; up to and including death.

One thing you can do to reduce the risk of unforeseen side effects is to only agree to take medicines that have been on the market for a long time; in fact, the longer the better. If your doctor wants to try a new medication, then it's time to have a deeper conversation about it. Explain why you would prefer to only take something that has been around for a long time. Your doctor should listen to your concerns and take them seriously. They may be able to explain why they believe a new drug is safe (it may be a new name for an old drug, or be in the same class of safer drugs), just be sure their assessment is based on something more than a drug company sales pitch.
