Excess skin after large weight loss

Weight RSS Feed

If you are in the process of losing weight and are seeing some success, congratulations! You should feel great about yourself. However, you may have one concern: what to do about excess skin after large weight loss. This can be an issue if you lose a lot of weight.

There are a few things to keep in mind that may make it less of a problem. For one thing, talk to a dermatologist to see if there are any proven creams that will keep your skin more supple and allow it to shrink back after you've lost your weight.

Your dermatologist is a skin expert so she can tell you what may help during this process.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you lose weight more slowly you may not have as much trouble with
excess skin after large weight loss. Your skin will be able to shrink up more readily if there is more time involved.

Everyone is different and some people just have skin that is more elastic than others. This can also be based on age. Another thing to remember is the amount of weight you need to lose and how targeted it is can also play a role.

For example, if you have a lot of fat in one small area, say your belly, that has created more stretching of the skin to begin with.

But if your weight was pretty evenly distributed around your whole body you wouldn't get that much stretching in the first place.

So while you may need to lose a lot of weight, you may not have to lose a lot of it in one small area. If the weight wasn't confined to just one small area, you won't have as much stretching to begin with.

Another very real possibility is that at some point you will want to talk to a plastic surgeon about some re-sculpting of the affected areas.

A board certified (check references) plastic surgeon will be able to let you know what it will cost as well as possible side effects so you can decide if that is the right course of action for you.

Building up a nice lean muscle tone may also help. Instead of looking like you've been deflated, you can keep the skin "stretched" but with muscle tone rather than fat.

But, unless you are planning on becoming a full time body builder, it's unlikely that you will replace the fat with enough muscle so you will most likely still have some excess skin. But you may be able to lessen it a little bit. And lean muscle tone is good for you.

I know that many people, myself included when I was pregnant, can gain weight and stretch their skin out. It's not the look most of us would like and that is really true when we've put in the time and effort to get in better shape and lose weight.

There are things you may be able to do to lessen the amount of excess skin after large weight loss, just keep these tips in mind. Good luck.
