Serious health dangers for extreme obese women

Weight RSS Feed

Women that are extremely obese are putting their health and their lives in serious danger. Most obesity related illnesses are not confined to just women as men that are obese are also at risk of serious health problems. There are some issues however that women are challenged with that men don't need to be concerned about.

One female related condition that obese women may face is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS which affects their reproductive system. This condition can occur in any women regardless of their weight but it is more common among those who are overweight or obese.

Young girls who are just entering into puberty may also suffer from this condition but it usually only occurs in girls this age if they are overweight. When a young girl has this condition it can have serious effects on her reproductive system.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a condition that often goes hand in hand with insulin resistance. Simple carbohydrates are absorbed quite fast into the bloodstream, so when a person eats a diet that is high in simple carbs then insulin resistance can occur.

When insulin resistance occurs the body's insulin production has difficulty in removing the blood sugar from the blood stream. Because the body has been releasing large amounts of insulin over a period of time the body has become resistant to it.

A person with insulin resistance will not necessary have PCOS but quite often the two are related and a person with PCOS is often insulin resistant and in pre-diabetic stage. With PCOS, small cysts grow on the ovaries and these cysts are not harmful themselves but they do cause an imbalance in hormones which can then lead to other problems.

One hormone imbalance that PCOS can cause is too much testosterone hormone. If a woman has high levels of testosterone then they may begin to develop facial hair, hair growth on the stomach and back and they may also have problems with their reproductive cycle.

Menstrual periods can be irregular if a woman has too much testosterone, they may be very heavy or very light or they may stop completely. PCOS can make it very difficult for a woman to become pregnant because of its affect on the reproductive system.

Another problem with PCOS is that it can cause weight gain. Although PCOS is more common in women that are overweight, the cycle is difficult to break when this condition itself can cause further weight gain.

PCOS can also cause depression, as can being overweight or obese. The hormone changes that occur with PCOS can contribute to depression and feelings of sadness.

Acne is another problem that can be brought on by PCOS as the high levels of testosterone can cause acne break outs.

PCOS cannot be prevented but you can reduce the chance of getting this condition by having a healthy diet, exercise regularly and quite smoking (if you do smoke). These three lifestyle changes are the recommended treatment for women that have PCOS so it stands to reason that if you do these to begin with it may prevent the condition from occurring altogether.

PCOS can occur in any women, even a teenage girl, but those who are overweight, smoke and are not active are at a much higher risk of developing this condition. When a woman is extremely obese it is more a matter of when she will get the condition rather than if she will get it.
