The climate of city of seattle

Travel RSS Feed

The climate of any place plays a very important role in determining the living of the people. It affects all their day to day life, their clothing, their food and festivals. Likewise it has a lot of effect on the outdoor and indoor activities and their sports. People in some part of the world cherish winters, others love spring while some adore summers. Similarly the climatic conditions of the Seattle are affecting the life of its inhabitants.
The location of the city is such that it lies on the Pacific Oceanic coast so the weather here is mild and does not show much fluctuation. Also the area is not affected by the heavy storms from the ocean and strong winds. This effect is created by the Mountains that act as a barrier and does not allow strong winds to blow. The most important ranges are Olympic Mountains and Cascade Range. These mountains not only block the strong winds but also the large amount of rainfall from the clouds that form in the ocean. Thus as per average the city receives less rainfall than the other metropolitan cities of United State such as New York, Houston and Atlanta.
Despite all these facts summers and winters remain the two most dominant seasons of the year. Summers are generally witnessed from mid July to mid September. Summers here are mild in character and not like the other parts of the country where the scorching heat is burning the bodies of the people. However the weather is sunny and dry with not too much rainfall. There are only a few spells of precipitation in the form of drizzle or light rain. These rains are not heavy as we have monsoon in other parts of the world and are only seldom accompanied by thunderstorm and lightening. Only a few incidents of heavy downpour and lightening have been reported in the history.
Springs follow summer season, which is obviously the most colorful part of the year with a lot of flowers and festivals around. The springs are relatively less sunny but dry and average amount of rainfall is low.
Then come winters which are also mild, the effect of the ocean on the climate is particularly dominant. Due to the nearby oceans the sky is always covered with a lot of clouds but true episodes of rain are only infrequent. The temperature during the days remains near 30 degree Fahrenheit, while the nights are a bit cold. History however reports some really cold winters but this happens only rarely. The coldest ever reported temperature is zero degrees. Snowfalls are seen on the mountain ranges where some snow falls every year. Generally the snowfall is only minor but sometimes it can be heavy enough to cause traffic problems by blocking the roads. Historically sometimes the snowstorms have also occurred in the area, when they were a serious cause of problems for the local public. They not only disturbed the traffic on the road but also disturbed the air traffic, disturbing a large number of flights.
In short Seattle is a city which enjoys a mild to moderate climate with all four seasons.
