Denver has a number of good colleges and universities all over the city that provide excellent higher education to students; local and foreign. But, the oldest private university in the Rocky Mountain Region of the United States is the University of Denver (DU), which was founded all the way back in 1864.
It is one of the oldest private institutions in Denver, Colorado. Currently, it has approximately 11,400 students enrolled in both graduate and under graduate programs of the university, however, the major population of the university comprises of undergraduate students. The university is co-educational and has a 125-acre, 0.51 km2, main campus located primarily in the University Neighborhood, about seven miles or 11 km, south of downtown Denver.
The university was founded by John Evans, the former Governor of Colorado. He founded the university to help educate and enlighten the newly born City of Denver, which back in 1858, was nothing more than a mining camp.
According to the U.S. News & World Report of 2011, University of Denver, is currently ranked 86th among all public and private National Universities rankings. The school is also presently ranked as the 48th best private university by the same publication. The undergraduate business program, The Daniels College of Business was ranked 74th in 2010 by Bloomberg Businessweek and 3rd in the nation for its ethics programs among 111 undergraduate business schools. The universities Sturm College of Law stands as the 77th best Graduate Law School by U.S News in a 2010 ranking.
Apart from the Sturm College of Law, the university follows a quarter system, also referred to as the trimester academic calendar, in which an academic year is divided into three academic quarters, each of which lasts 10 weeks. This academic system is much better as it allows students to take more classes annually than students who follow the more conventional 15-week semester system.
As a co-educational institution, in accordance to the College Board, strictly under a competitive standard, the average admitted applicant is at his or her top 25% of their graduating class, all of whom also undergo a process of interviews. In fact, Denver is one of the few schools in the US that individually interviews each and every undergraduate applicant, indicating that the university is very interested in the person himself and not just the applicant's qualifications. The interview was named after a very prominent DU professor, Ammi Hyde, and a majority of the students describe this interviewing process as insightful rather than painful as it helps them to get familiar and settle in the university better and to be clear about what they should expect from the university and what academic standards they should maintain.
The university offers a wide range of courses and degree programs. These include Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Law, Psychology, International Studies, Music, Engineering and Computer Science, Media, Film, and Journalism Studies, and some interdisciplinary programs like the Cognitive Neuroscience - (Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry) and Video Game Design - (Computer Science and Digital Media Studies).
