Waterslides-one of the most popular vacation ideas

Recreation RSS Feed

This article is all about waterslides. With over 1,000 water parks in North America alone they have become some of the most popular family vacation destinations in the summertime months. The World Water Park Association estimates that over 80 million people attend water parks every year with the most popular being Disney's Typhoon Lagoon in Florida which averages 2 million visitors per year.

The history of the waterslide dates back to the invention of the aqueduct to transport water to areas of the country that needed it most. Aqueducts usually start up in the mountains and travel to the lowlands to furnish water to farmland or cities along the way. Workers on the aqueducts would ride the water down the aqueduct to make repairs or when it was time to be off duty to save time from having to navigate steep mountain trails.

Waterslides are meant for fun these days and the first waterslide meant for fun was invented by a man named Herbert Sellner. His invention was called the Sellner water-Toboggan and was erected in 1923. Herbert Sellner was an innovator in the amusement park ride technology and had significant influence in the invention of the roller coaster and the Tilt-a-whirl. Newer incarnations of slides let several riders ride down at once in a large tube with handles on the sides so that everyone has something to hold on to.

These summertime fun slides are not just for water parks any more. You can get one for the pool in your own back yard. It will not be as big or as tall as the ones you go to the water parks for but for added fun to your backyard pool you cannot beat a custom waterslide.

The tallest waterslide in the country is Disney's Blizzard Beach and stands 121 feet. The vertical drop lets you reach speeds of upwards of 55 miles per hour. The tallest waterslide in the world, though, is located in Brazil at the Beach Park amusement park. It is called Insano and towers above everything else at the water park at 135 feet tall and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Slip-n-Slide is one of the first home slides made. All it is is a wide strip of yellow plastic connected to a hose that lays on the ground. The object is to run and belly slide across this yellow piece of plastic covered with water to stay cool in the heat of the summer. Pools were mostly meant for ricj people when the Slip-n-Slide came on the scene and it made it a lot easier for kids to have more fun in the summer.

The Slip-n-Slide is intended for use only by children. There have been instances of adults and teens being injured during use. Severe spinal injuries can occur because adults and teens are bigger and weigh more than children. Several adults have even become quadriplegics due to injuries to the neck because they landed wrong while diving onto the strip of yellow plastic.

Not all waterslides are dangerous, though, most are fun and very safe.
