Choosing a new puppy-dont make the wrong choice

Recreation RSS Feed

If you have been considering getting a new puppy, then there are some things you need to think about prior to making your final decision. It's a sad fact, but millions of dogs are put down at shelters each and every year. While there are many reasons this happens, most of them can be traced back to people making the wrong decision when choosing a new puppy.

All pet owners are responsible for the well-being of their pets. Unfortunately, many of them have good intentions that don't hold up in the face of harsh reality. So, keep these things in mind prior to picking a puppy.

1. How committed are you to taking care of a puppy? Each breed requires various levels of attention, but all puppies need a lot of attention for several weeks at least. Puppies have a lot of things to learn, will make messes, need trips to the vet, require a special diet, and have to learn the basic rules of your home. They need all of that and plenty of attention, too.

2. Imagine it as an adult. Puppies are adorable little bundles of joy, aren't they? Puppies scamper about, are playful and are quick to show affection...then time goes on and things change. It's easy to be distracted by their cuteness, but they will become adults. For example, a Rottweiler puppy is as much fun as can be, but they are a large breed that requires the right type of person to handle them. Plus, they will take up a lot of room, and require a lot of room to be happy. It also costs more to feed a large dog than it costs to feed a smaller one.

3. Know the breed. Choosing a new puppy requires more than just liking the way it looks (as a puppy or an adult). Taking some time to learn about individual breeds now will save you a lot of hassle in the future. Is the breed energetic? Does it tend to do well around children? How active is it? What diseases and ailments is it most susceptible to? Does it shed? Are there any other traits you should know about? How is the dog likely to fit in with where you live?

4. Where will you get it from? You basically have three choices of where to get a new puppy from: a private individual, a breeder, or a rescue shelter. Though it's a remote possibility, private sellers may have fake papers for the dogs they're selling. So, if you want a purebred, then contacting an official kennel club for a list of approved breeders will offer you the most protection. However, if you want to potentially save the life of a puppy, then getting one from a rescue shelter is your best option (assuming you have done your homework).

Choosing a puppy takes some commitment, but it will be more than worth when you have a pet you can enjoy for many years to come.
