Types of loft conversion

Real estate RSS Feed

Lofts are the accommodations that are developed as a single open space in the upper rooms of the house. Loft conversion is an important method that is used to create space in your house without having to spend too much. In the previous years lofts were merely used as the storage rooms where the extra material of the house was kept. Now as the things have changed and the trend of storing the material in the cupboards has increased people have started using the lofts for their living.
Five main types of loft conversion have been seen to be popular. The most common is the Dormer loft conversion. Dormer is an extension to the existing roof, allowing for additional floor space and headroom within the loft conversion. Dormers are constructed in variety of styles. They not only give an internal space but also add to external beauty. Various styles of the dormers include Gable fronted Dormer which resembles the kennel in its shape, Hipped roof dormer, flat roof dormer and a shed dormer. The shed dormers are built such that the roof is at an angle to the main roof.
Rear dormer loft conversion is created in the back of the home by creating a square shaped extension. This provides a large space for creating the new rooms and much of your furniture can be accommodated. The roofs of these rooms are flat and high. This kind of lofts can be built on the terraced buildings. Another advantage is that you do not need to get permission to build a rear dormer. Front and side dormer loft conversions are the smaller conversions that add additional room to the already constructed building. However you need to get permission from the corporation for building these lofts and the construction is such that you have to remain within the confines of your property.
Hip to gamble loft conversion is the conversion which creates a large space for the living. In this case the sloping side of the house is converted into a flat roof. Thus you get a large area which can accommodate stair case and other furniture. However Permission from the planning authorities is necessary for such a conversion.
Mansard loft conversion is similar to the rear dormer loft conversion. These are present in the houses where the back is flat topped and the back wall slopes inwards at an angle.
Velux was a leading window manufacturing company after the name of which the velux conversion was named. Velux is a type of the conversion in which a loft is converted inside the house without altering the roof line. It is a cost effective procedure and you don’t need planning permission. It is especially useful when you are living in the conservation area where any further construction is prohibited and a good amount of the headroom is available. The Velux windows fit in the already constructed roof and thus do not require much alteration. However there construction is such that they allow great amount of heat and light in the room so the Velux blinds provide good protection.
