The romance or nostalgia that a swing evokes can be compared to that of the monsoons when they have just finished or are yet to start! At some point in life everybody has sat on a swing and been transported to a gentler and dreamier world.
The choices available today are so many that even with the minimum of space, those determined enough would find something suitable. The swings in the market have moved well beyond the staid version of the metallic threeseater, with a canopy and removable cushions. These are the most seen and used in this category, with almost every house finding place for one.
These come with gold detailing, velvet cushions, a cloth or tile canopy the variations are endless.
The next type in this category is the wooden plank supported by ethnic looking brass chains, mostly seen in South Indian homes earlier. The antique markets stock quite a few of these in all sizes and colours.
The only drawback to these is that they are attached to the ceiling, which limits their usage.
Today there are swing chairs in jute and cane, hammocks in nylon and leather and wonderfully futuristic looking chairs or 'pods' which are suspended on amazingly light frameworks, which can be kept indoors or out. Jute chairs too have been around for a long time, but there are exciting new versions coming out these days. One big advantage is that these are very space efficient and can be folded and put away. They can be maneuvered out of the way when not in use, let down only when the need is there.
Hammock chairs too are available in many colours that can be co-ordinated with decor. There are double seaters as well as single seaters, tailormade for your lifestyle.
There are also varieties available with cotton or nylon intermeshed for all weather comfort. All these options offer the same feeling — that of being suspended outside time, so if that is what your soul hankers after, it is definitely time to invest some money on a hammock.
