Underwater sculpture museum a welcome addition of cancun real estate region

Real estate RSS Feed

Cancun Real Estate region has been a tourism and real estate magnet for many years. Every year, tourists, real estate investors and retirees comes to Cancun to enjoy its great lifestyle, culture and beauty.

In recent times, the infrastructure in Cancun is been developed at a frantic pace. As you must be aware, Cancun international airport and International exhibition center has already added a new dimension to this great city. This has raised the profile of Cancun as a premier tourism and real estate market in the region and world. With an easy access to Real Estate in Cancun region and world class amenities for international businesses, Cancun real estate is poised for major investments and growth.

Apart from business, leisure and lifestyle industry is also receiving great attention. Underwater sculpture museum will have more than 400 concrete sculptures making it world's largest underwater museum, right in the ocean in front of Cancun and the island of Isla Mujeres. After a year and half years of hard work, and at a cost of 80,000 dollars, 3 sculptures have been submerged in the sea in November end.

The sculptures made of PH-neutral concrete will attract algae and marine life and give the local ecosystem a boost. Park's director Jaime Gonzalez stated that, one of the aims is to reduce the pressure on the natural habitat in other areas of the park by luring tourists away from existing coral reef, which has suffered damage from hurricanes and large scale human activity. About 750,000 tourists visit the park every year with about 450,000 of them visiting Punta Nizuc, an area of just four hectares. This creates tremendous pressure on natural coral reefs. Lesser number of tourists will hopefully allow the coral in the reef to regenerate. Coral reefs attract marine life like colorful fishes, turtles, sea urchins, sponges, and sharks and also provide shelter to sea creatures to breed or take refuge.

The project has an initial budget of $350,000, with Mexican government been the major contributor. The rest of the funds have been donated by organizations and individuals for development of Cancun. Museum's first phase is slated to be completed by May 2011, by which 400 sculptures will be submerged. The cost of each statue will be between $875 and $1000 US. The Underwater Sculpture Museum will eventually have 27 rooms.

According to Mr. de Caires Taylor, the sculptor, the sculptures have been designed to be durable and since neutral ph concrete has been used, there will be no detrimental effect on the local ecosystem.

The Cancun Underwater Sculpture Museum can be visited by diving and snorkelers with professional guides. The tour will cost between $40 and $60 US. The underwater trip promises to be a very unique and exciting experience for tourists and locals alike.
