The wireless reading device - a virtual library at your fingertips

Publishing RSS Feed

If you do not have any idea of what a wireless reading device is, then you are not alone as it is a relatively new addition to the world of high tech gadgetry. This particular device is made to make it easier to download digital books (also known as ebooks), and to read them.

You can log on to the online bookseller of your choice, such as Amazon.com, and look through their selections. Any titles that are available in digital form can be purchase and then downloaded to your reading device. You will be able to read it as soon as the download is complete. Then, just like a physical book, you can save it, and read it any time thereafter.

Several models of readers are currently on the market, each one has the same basic capabilities of downloading and reading, but specific models will have their own unique features as well. One feature a lot of people like in a wireless reading device is the ability to directly connect to an online bookstore without having to pay for a wireless phone plan to do so.

A popular example of this is the Kindle--sold by Amazon--which includes its own network, known as Whispernet. This allows you to tap into any Sprint network, anywhere in the United States, at no additional cost. While it may not seem like much, the savings can add up, especially for avid readers. If this sounds appealing to you, be sure to check for this feature when shopping for a reader.

The typical wireless reading device weighs less than a pound (around ten ounces) and has a viewing screen of about six inches or so. Another thing to consider is how the words look on the screen. A new technology known as E-Ink does a much better job of replicating a traditional book made of paper. This is much easier in the eyes and is something to consider.

The promise of such readers is that you can have a virtual library at your fingertips. In theory, this is a great idea. However, you still need to check the storage capacity of any reader you are thinking about getting. Some models can hold around 1,500 ebooks, while others hold less. One way to get around storage limits is to see if the models you are interested in have a port for using external memory. Of course, the concept of a virtual library doesn't matter all that much if the retailer doesn't offer a lot of digital titles, so be sure to check.

The nature of technology is that it is always moving forward, and the wireless reading device is no exception. They are getting better and better, and prices are coming down, making them more affordable than ever. Wireless readers are far more convenient than trying to carry a stack of books around with you all day. Also, you don't have to drive to a bookstore to get new books, and the download process is fast and easy.
