How to choose the right love poem

Love RSS Feed

You need one or more poems about love for whatever purpose and cannot decide on a particular one because you don’t know what to look for? You’ve read texts about poetry but you don’t understand what they’re talking about because you don’t know what a sonnet or a metre is? Here’s a quick love poem guide for the undecided.
First, you should know your occasion. What do you want to use the love poem for? Is it going to be a gift, an entertaining idea for a party or maybe something to write onto a congratulation card? Do you need a positive or a melancholic poem about love?
Second, you have to know the form of your poem. Do you want to read it out or do you want to write it down? If you’re going to recite it, will you do so for just one person or in front of a large party? If you’re going to use it in written format, will you write it out by hand or will you print it?
Third, you have to choose the style of the poem. Whether you’re going for a romantic Shakespearean sonnet or a modern love poem in free verse, fact is that love poems should always match the occasion. There are romantic, melancholic, funny, and satirical love poems. Moreover, poems have been written in all literary eras: different forms such as the ballad (a very long poem), the sonnet (a 14 line poem) or modern poems with a rather liberal structure have emerged.
Last but not least, you should know how poems, especially love poems, are designed. Literally, a poem is a piece of poetic language. However, poetic language is a very open and debatable term, so here is what you should look for. Rhyme scheme: Many people associate poetry with repeated similar sounding words. There are a lot of different types of rhymes, some are more obvious and others are rather subtle. Metre: The metrical make up of a poem tells you about word stress. There are different types of metre of which some are more popular than others, also depending on the language your poem is written in. Last but not least there is the structure of the poem. A poem can be divided into stanzas and lines but it doesn’t have to be.
When you remember these simple tips, the choice of the right love poem will not be an issue anymore!
