General electric deep fryer - old faithful tips

Kitchen RSS Feed

If you are in the market for a deep fryer, you may want to take a good look at a General Electric Deep Fryer. There are several styles available and you may just find what you are looking for in features and impact on your budget.

All sit right on your counter, have adjustable thermostats and two of the four models I found have electronic timers to tell you when your food is done. One of the four models has a filtration system to filter the oil.

The most popular general electric deep fryer model is Model #169219 and features a lid with a handle and view window so you can keep an eye on the food you are frying. Other features include a removable oil reservoir, for ease of cleaning, an immersible heating element which heats the oils quicker, a big basket to hold a lot of food all at once.

This model has a temperature control knob, and timer with a display panel. The power cord has a safety feature called a magnetic plug. The magnetic plug easily disconnects from the deep fryer to prevent the cord and fryer unit from being pulled er when the unit is in use, thus avoiding hot oil burns on children and pets.

Before operating your new deep fryer make sure you set it on a clean, flat, heat resistant surface and that the oil reservoir is secured in the correct position. The basket handle should be inserted correctly and locked in place in the frying basket.

Your deep fryer can be used to fry up a load of appetizers, french fries, chicken, or fish. This deep fryer holds a maximum of 3 liters of oil. The best types of oil you should use are canola oil, corn oil, vegetable, sunflower, and soybean oils. These oils have a high smoke point and do well in a deep fryer. Olive oil, peanut oil, lard and walnut oils or not suitable to use in your new fryer. Do not use flavored oils.

The oil you use is important in enhancing the taste of the food you are cooking. The wrong oil can spoil the taste you are looking for. The oil's quality breaks down when cooking a higher temperatures and there are some specific oil etiquette you must follow to ensure fresh tasting fried food.

Never mix different cooking oils. If one of the oils has a lower smoking point it may burn and taint the flavor of your food. Only use fresh, clean oil. While using the fryer, make sure to remove any and all burnt food particles. Filter the oil after use with a fine mesh filter or filter paper to remove small particles. If you fry fish, it is advisable not to re-use the oil because fish has a strong flavor and will affect the taste of other foods.

These are important tips that you can use to thoroughly enjoy your general electric deep fryer for many years to come.
