Ways to choose a flooring tile

Interior design RSS Feed

We find an interesting history related to the floor tiles. It can be assumed that the Babylonians and the Greeks were as particular in choosing the tiles as people are nowadays. Tiles have actually been discovered in the Greek and Babylonian civilization, as well as in the Egyptian civilization. The decorated tiles that are usually taken for granted now actually have their origin in Persia. From Persia, these tiles spread allover the world. These days, tiles are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles and textures.
Shape and size of tiles is an important aspect. There are certain considerations that are related to the shape of the tiles. The tiles those are of rectangular shape or the square shape are easier to fit in any space than the tiles which have irregular shapes. The size of the tiles is also an important consideration. For example the tiny mosaic tiles might be very appealing to the eye but the larger tiles would be much easier to install. The larger tiles would also require lesser time in installation, than the smaller ones. One should also make sure that all the tiles that are being installed are of one size. The tiles usually get a variation in size during the manufacturing process, due to expansion that takes place in the tiles. The tiles with varied sizes are much more difficult to install than the ones that are of the same size.
Moreover, it is also important that one keeps in mind the finish of the tiles. There are many different preferences of people related to the finishing of the times. Some people prefer unglazed tiles, natural finish or terracotta while others prefer the glazed tiles. One should be careful that these tiles have the same shade number and are from the same lot, to avoid any variations or differences in the color of tiles.
One should also have this idea of where a specific type of tile would be used. A buyer of tiles or the homeowner should be clear about the location where the tiles would be installed. For example the porcelain tiles are robust and are quite suitable for being used in the outdoors. Whereas, ceramic can be considered a good choice for bathroom or kitchen, because these places are susceptible to moisture, and the ceramic tiles are good at resisting moisture.
Moreover, a person who is buying the tiles should be aware of the rating that is given to the different kinds of tiles. The Porcelain Enamel Institute rates the tiles according to several criteria such as how hard they are, how much moisture they absorb and how durable they are. There are actually five PEI ratings that can help the customer in choosing suitable tile.Group 1 tiles are suitable for light traffic. Group 2 are for medium traffic. Group 3 tiles are made for medium to heavy traffic. Group 4 tiles are for heavy traffic and may be used in commercial buildings where there is a lot of rush. Group 5 are for the extra heavy traffic and can be used almost anywhere. One can choose the tiles according to the areas at home.
