Trimming a tree

Home improvement RSS Feed

Tree trimming is the most important part of the maintenance of the gardens and landscapes. Most of the people who have trees at home have to undergo this process on regular basis. Many people take up the process for the aesthetic beauty of the plant others for them strong and healthy while still others who want to cultivate the counterparts of these trees in their land. Many of the public gardens trim the trees in such a way that they form an exquisite shape and thus the place rather than looking ordinary take the form of a wonderland. Different types of trees have different growth rates so the rates of trimming will also be different. Also seasonal variation plays a great role, majority of the plants grow very rapid in spring and summer and therefore need very frequent trimming. The growth tends to decrease marvelously in winter. Due to this reason the rate of the trimming may also vary with the season. The tree that needs trimming twice in a month in Spring, may not require even a single trim in fall.
Many times people employ a professional for keeping and maintaining their trees short. Trimming a tree is an easy process, and can also be done on do it yourself basis. First of all the shears need to be purchased from the market. Whenever you are purchasing a shear make sure that you buy the one with the long limbs. This kind of shear makes doing the work easy. Also you may need a pruning saw so that you can efficiently cut the trunk and the wood. Secure the ladder to a place where the risk of falling is minimal. Begin by removing the dead twigs and woods from the tree. This is followed by the removal of the structurally unhealthy shoots and leaves. When you are pruning the tree make sure that all the cuts are made outside the branch collar. By cutting the tree in this manner the remaining part will seal off and heal quickly and thus would allow healthy growth in future. Also while cutting the tree it’s good to cut at the beginning of the co-dominant trunk. This will allow the maintenance of a single trunk and prevent excessive shapeless growth; also the health problems will be minimized.
Newly planted trees should not be pruned in the first two years of life. Pruning should begin only after certain age. The trees should be trimmed to up to a certain length. For example most of the trees are maintained at eight feet in length you can decide to have it trimmed when the length of the tree reaches one foot higher. If you have grown the tree to hinder the view or to create privacy in the house you may decide to maintain a greater length. The spaces between the branches should be even. A well trimmed tree has single trunk, evenly spaced branches, an adequate height, good vertical spacing and desired shape.
