Traditionally Chair Rail molding served both a decorative and pragmatic function. Chair-rail molding divides the wall, usually about three feet above the floor. Chair-rail was originally designed to prevent the tops of the chair backs from denting or damaging the walls. For this reason chair rail moulding are traditionally installed about 30 to 33 inches above the floor and continue around the perimeter of the room. to protect walls from chair marks.

Chair Rail today is often used purely for the aesthetic as decorative molding element. These moldings are mainly installed in hallways, dining rooms, living rooms, but are also found in family rooms as well as bedrooms. These moldings are used either in areas where the walls are subjected to a lot of wear and tear, or in large catering halls, ballrooms, etc. where they add architectural interest and a traditional grand ambiance to the space.

Chair rail moldings are available in different materials, usually either wood or polyurethane. Polyurethane is a high density composite that has an added advantage over wooden chair moldings. It is lighter in weight, easy to work and has much richer in design detail. Chair rail moldings made of polyurethane are impervious to pest and moisture in comparison to their wood counterparts. Chair rails are one of the easiest home improvement projects to undertake for the DIY as they are extremely lightweight and easy to install.

Chair rail molding as well as Frieze molding are wall moldings that have always been popular features in all architectural styles. Chair rail molding is also sometimes called dado rail. Today, chair rail molding is the most common detail in most high-end interiors. Chair-rail molding adds a feeling of detail and charm to the room and brings the space together with a continuous unifying line. Chair rail also sometimes serves as a cap for wainscoting panels. Panel molding and frieze molding have a similar visual effect to chair rail molding.

There are important factors to be considered while selecting and installing a chair rail moulding in any room. The first factor is the size of the chair rail, and the other is the installed height, in other words the distance between the molding and the floor, you need to take into consideration overall “scale” meaning ceiling height, room size etc.. and other horizontal lines in the room. A good rule of thumb is to position it on the bottom “third” of the wall The range from the floor, is usually somewhere between thirty to forty inches.

To maximize the effect, a good designer would usually paint the wall on top of the chair rail one color, and below the chair rail another color. when combined with square panels created with panel molding this creates the illusion of a traditional wainscoting panel below the chair rail.

The web is a good place to start. There are some good resources online for finding high quality chair rail moldings as well as many other fine architectural products such as, crown moldings, wall frieze, ceiling medallion decorative ceiling medallions, panel moldings, corbels, pilasters and door surrounds etc.
