Wooden floors and their installation

Home improvement RSS Feed

Trees have been cut off the face of the earth for centuries, and they have been from ancient times serving a purpose. They’re wood has been used for different functions over the years, the primary being for fuel. As the years progressed on, wood has been found to be a good building material and has been used in the construction of houses and even buildings for that matter, eg Celjska koa, a hotel in Celje, Slovenia. Modernly wood is used to make frames for buildings. Also wood planks are being used as wooden floors.
Products manufactured from timber, and then processed as flooring are wooden floors. Wood is a popular flooring choice for both decorative and practical reasons. They add natural warmth and shine, and are easy to clean, and are durable. Another important factor about them is that they are perfect for just any room, and provide a subtle yet fashionable backdrop. Wood flooring is made from a wide variety of wood species, each of which has something different to offer in durability and style. There are two kinds, one is solid hardwood floors, the other is engineered wood flooring. It is very important that you educate yourself on the properties of the various wood flooring species before you go ahead with installing one on the floor on your home.
Here are a few ways for installing wood,
Tongue-and-groove: One side and one end of the plank have a groove; the other side and end have a tongue (protruding wood along an edge's center). The tongue and groove fit snugly together, thus joining or aligning the planks, and are not visible once joined.
"Click" systems: this is similar to tongue-and-groove, but instead of fitting directly into the groove, the board is angled in to make the curved tongue fit into the modified groove. No adhesive is used when installing a "click" floor, making board replacement easier. This system is useful for people who prefer to work on their own rather than getting work from laborers.
Floor connection system: The general principle is to have grooves on all four sides of the plank with a separate, piece that is inserted into the grooves of two planks to join them. The piece used for the connection can be made from wood, rubber, or plastic. This installation system allows for different materials (i.e. wood and metal) to be installed together if they have the same connection system.
Wood flooring can also be installed utilizing the glue-down method. This is an especially popular method for solid parquet flooring installations on concrete sub-floors. A layer of mastic is placed onto the sub-floor using a trowel. The wood pieces are then laid on top of the glue and hammered into place using a rubber mallet and a protected 2x4 to create a level floor. Often the parquet floor will require sanding and re-finishing after the glue-down installation method due to the small size pieces.
Wood floors are not that difficult to maintain as all they require is proper cleaning.
