Pressure washers and accessories

Home improvement RSS Feed

In other articles we've covered the many benefits to pressure washers, and so we will only do a small recap here. They have a powerful cleaning ability that will get the job done, be it home, industrial or commercial usage. Models available are divided into three categories- hot water, cold water and steam power. Each model is designed for a specific purpose, but any pressure washer emits a powerful enough stream of water to clean tough dirt and grime. A triple-mode unit is able to do the work of each of these kinds, making them a prime choice if you have multiple needs for a pressure washer. You also have the choice between electric, gas or propane fueled units, which mostly depends on your preferences for refueling and the location where your unit will be most used. Pressure washers are the ideal tool for many jobs in many settings, including washing cars, trucks and RVs, washing boats, cleaning siding of the house, cleaning sidewalks, fences and patio furniture, clearing out gutters, and making practically anything you like look like new again (within reason, of course. I would not recommend pressure washing an old couch in an effort to modernize it). Choosing a pressure washer is a decision you should take a little bit of time to make. There is a plethora of available options, and you will want to make sure you do not leave out anything you need or pay extra for features you will never use. A wise first step is to figure out exactly what projects you'll be needing your pressure washer for. Is it to clean your patio furniture and deck? Or the siding? Will it be used regularly or more infrequently? Realizing what your most common uses for it will be will ensure that you end up with exactly what you need. Smaller jobs naturally require a smaller, less powerful unit. Electric pressure washers are perfect for home use, as they are durable, portable and easy to use while still getting the job done right. An important side note when talking about home use is pressure washing vehicles- a low pressure, somewhere around 1,000 to 1,300 PSI, should be used to avoid stripping paint off the car, which would somewhat defeat the purpose of cleaning it in the first place. The evidence in support of pressure washers is unquestionable. For countless jobs at home and at work, they reduce time and labor and increase quality of the finished product. To help you truly maximize the effects, there are a few accessories that can improve your already miraculous machine. We are not necessarily going to cover them in order of usefulness or importance because this will vary from person to person- what is the golden tool for one may sit on the tool bench of another for eternity. So just remember that the most useful tool is the one that you actually have use for. That being said, let's jump in to the wonderful world of accessories (and not the pink, sparkly kind). First up, a carbide tip sand injector. This allows you to remove paint and other coatings from surfaces. Using with a wet sandblasting kit, like the one offered by Mi-T-M makes this possible without creating a suffocating dust storm in your work space. For large surfaces, a rotary surface cleaner is indispensable. Available in 18 or 28 inches, some are available from Mi-T-M that work with all pressure washers and standard nozzles. Their bristle brush feature and high pressure trigger help you take care of really tough spots. A low pressure detergent injector allows you to apply detergents that the manufacturer recommends. Mi-T-M's product has an adjustable chemical draw, and a durable solid brass body. To further increase the cleaning power and efficiency, take a look at rotating nozzles that offer zero degree spray impact with 25 degree coverage. There are also many different tips available that change the spray pattern. Think of it like the handle on a garden hose- the wider the spray, the less powerful the stream. Any kid who has ever been assigned the chore of watering the garden knows exactly how each setting works, and exactly how strong that skinny jet of water can be. The same principle applies to pressure washers. Accessorizing your pressure washer will most likely prove to be the second best home improvement decision of your life; second only, of course, to buying that pressure washer in the first place.
