What to know about backup generators

Home improvement RSS Feed

Whether for home or industrial use, there is no outfit that could not benefit from having a backup generator. There are many types and sizes available, so it's important to know what will best fit your needs. We will do a quick overview of different generators and hopefully help you find just what you are looking for, even if you don't quite know what that is yet.
If you've had experience with a generator, it's likely that it was gas-powered. Gas is the most familiar option, and for good reason- gas is easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Prices can vary, and depend on what components are included; for example, generators that use multi-cylinder, water-cooled engines are more expensive because they produce less noise while operating a steady temperature. The cheaper products are usually single-cylinder, air-cooled engines, which makes them a bit noisier than others. Gas engines are more useful for places in which they will be used frequently, or else they might have problems with fuel filters and carburetors. However, they are easy to use, safe and reliable. For residential emergencies, gas backup generators are a cost-effective and secure choice.
Diesel generators are heavy-duty engines. Diesel fuel is a bit more expensive than gas, but it also produces more energy than gas. Diesel is the least flammable of the possible fuel sources, and these products require less maintenance than gas generators. They are rugged and reliable and have a long life. They are designed to work for long periods and have low costs. Diesel units are generally heavier than gas, and engine noise can be significantly higher. Despite this, they are the most reliable choice for backup generators.
If you live in a cold climate and are concerned about storing your fuel, a propane unit may be the best choice for you. Propane is now approximately the same price as gasoline, and can be stored in underground tanks that can provide you with almost two weeks of backup power. Propane starts easily, even in cold weather, and it is not hurt by condensation, either. People used to hesitate when it came to propane units because they thought the fuel system was too complicated for them to safely operate. However, with the advancements in technology and training, this is no longer a problem, and anyone can safely work with it. As for advantages, propane has many. Propane fuel can be stored for longer periods of time than other kinds of fuel, it does not "gum up," it burns clean, and it does not have the risk of wet stacking like diesels do. It has a much lower engine noise level in comparison to other styles, it has longer and uninterrupted run times, as well as a longer engine life in general.
Natural gas units are similar to propane; natural gas is an incredibly reliable source of fuel- the only time it may be threatened is in the event of a major earthquake or hurricane. If you have a natural gas setup, it is such a simple way to go. You have an unlimited fuel source, so refueling is a thing of the past. Natural gas does not gum up, it's available during power outages, it burns clean, has a low noise level, and has a long engine life thanks to the clean-burning fuel.
Backup generators are permanent installations, and are often used for homes, hospitals, and other buildings. They are sanity-saving machines when it comes to natural disasters. Be it an outage caused by inclement weather, electrical problem, rolling blackout, or any other situation, backup generators will help you retain as much of your daily life as possible. Choosing your generator size is an important step. The size simply refers to how much wattage you'll need for appliances you'll plan to run off of your generator compared to how much energy the generator can produce.
Not convinced yet? Even if it's just for your home, think of all the things you need electricity for in your day. Without power, your alarm clock won't go off and you won't get up; depending on your water system, you might not be able to take a shower, wash your hands, or get a drink. Every time you walk into a room and flip the light switch, nothing happens. Your fridge is dark and everything inside starts to go bad. Your land-line and internet hookup don't work, you can't charge your cell phone, iPod or laptop, your TV doesn't work, and you can't stream movies. You also can't cook anything, do laundry, or the dishes. You can't even turn on a reading lamp. I'd say backup generators are more than worth any cost.
