How to build custom reptile cages

Home improvement RSS Feed

For those who like the idea of having reptiles for pets many also like the idea of building their own custom reptile cages for them. If this is the case you need to consider a few details to make sure that your new pet will make the transition easily.

The first, and foremost point is to ensure that it will be large enough for your new friend. Do research to determine the maximum size your creature will obtain so that you can plan accordingly. You might also want to factor in the idea that once you grow accustomed to this pet you might want another one. Planning ahead will eliminate the possibility of having to construct another house.

Next, think safety, for the family and the pet. Your safety includes making sure that the heat source is located at the top of the unit and inside to prevent accidentally knocking it over and starting a fire. This could also cause undue stress on the animal that could cause it to become sick or even die from the cold, and from stress on the body.

Another safety factor is the stability of the structure. It needs to be wide enough that a child or a large dog can’t pull it over or even the animal itself. Some breeds of lizards can grow to 8 feet long while some snakes can weight over a hundred pounds. Plan that into your design.

No matter what type of reptile you choose there are some important things they will need. One is a good heat source. This could be one lamp or a series of lamps strategically placed. Check your temperature and make sure that it can be properly maintained with what you have.

Next, animals like to feel safe. That means a good place to retreat when they are frightened or just want o be left alone. An enclosure will suffice as long as it is something that is closed in enough to provide adequate cover.

Custom reptile cages are no good without a good water source. This is where research will come in handy, as well. For instance, chameleons will not drink from water that isn’t moving. Putting a bowl of water in with them will result in a dehydrated animal. Know what your particular breed likes most and do your best to accommodate them.
