Well water filtration system - be safe not sorry

Home improvement RSS Feed

Many people do not have access to water from municipal sources and must get their water from a private source. Unfortunately, these sources do not always provide clean and pure water as in years ago. This is why it is necessary for these individuals to use a well water filtration system. The following is a guide to determining which system is the most effective for your needs.

Since the prices of these systems varies so greatly it is important not to let that be the deciding factor. It is better to go with the proper system, even if it costs a little more than anticipated, in order to gain peace of mind that the water your family is consuming is as clean as possible. Since a buildup of chemicals and metals from water can eventually lead to serious diseases, even cancer, it is important that the model work efficiently.

Since these networks can be so costly it is advisable that the water be tested to determine if there are any specific materials that should be addressed. That way you are not spending money on something that wont take care of the problem.

These systems fall into two categories: point-of-use and whole house. Point-of-use refers to a unit that attaches directly to a faucet or even a shower. Filtering is accomplished using a single filter right there at the tap and the rest of the house remains unfiltered unless an additional unit is utilized elsewhere. These are adequate for the job, are generally inexpensive and easy to install. The filters that they utilize can be acquired in many different stores and do not require a professional for assistance.

The other setup is called a whole house network. As the name implies, they cover everything within the home, including showers, washing machine, dishwasher, faucets and even toilets- unless a diverted source of that water is created. Naturally, these systems are more expensive, but they are also professionally maintained which helps to ensure their compliance with the standards.

Whole house units utilize several stages of filters, with each one having its own specific purpose. One stage might be for sand and debris while another may focus specifically on contaminants. Another filter may work on trapping chemicals, or VOCs, or it may go after radon, pesticides etc.

The important thing to remember with a whole house well water filtration system is that it is designed in stages for a reason. Each stage has its own purpose and all of the stages have to perform their own task efficiently or it will prove to be inadequate.
