Under sink water filtration tips for cleaner water

Home improvement RSS Feed

More and more homeowners are looking into purchasing devices to clean up their water. Some offer more features than others, prices vary and models work differently. So how do you go about choosing the right one for you? A good place to start would be to look at a under sink water filtration unit.

These are basic systems except that the filter goes out of sight under the countertop. This is especially helpful for those who have a limited amount of counter space, but even if this is not the case many people like this option simply because they dont want to look at it.

There are different variations of this setup available. Some are basic designs with a single filter and a faucet mounted on the sink. Other designs can be incorporated into the original faucet with the filter beneath. But if you are looking for the best features there are certain things to consider.

By far, the best models will have multiple filters. Each one is designed to capture specific materials. One filter will be specifically for sand, dirt, etc., while another may focus more on metals. Still another stage may be designated for sub-micron materials. Having these various stages ensures that everything will be focused on and nothing will get by. A single filter design cannot effectively take care of all of the various contaminations that will pass through.

But there are other options available, too. You can always go with a UV light model. These are unique in that the water passes through a cylinder as UV light is exposed to it. The effects of the UV cause a breakdown of microbes which forces them to change into material that is no longer a threat to humans. The only bad thing about these units is that they cannot effectively take care of all materials and are best incorporated with some other type of filtering system.

No matter what unit you purchase the first step should be to have the water tested professionally. This will enable you to go armed with exactly what you need to eliminate from your water supply. Otherwise, the under sink water filtration system that you end up with may not be suitable for taking care of all of the components that are present. In the end, your goal is to have clean, safe water from a system that remains inconspicuously under the counter and out of the way.
