Air compressors and how to choose

Home improvement RSS Feed

There are a lot of types of air compressors, and it can be a little confusing when you're deciding what to purchase for your home or work site. Let's do an overview of what your options are, and how to choose what will be best for your needs. Air compressors are used in a wide range of settings. They can also be used for various crafts and hobbies, home maintenance, automobile repair, industrial jobs and much more. For home use, I think their greatest benefit is their ability to run air tools.
Air tools are lighter and easier to handle than electric tools, and are also longer-lasting. They run cooler, which decreases the risk of electric shock or fire. Accidental air leaks do not release contaminants, which makes them safer than hydraulic-powered tools, as well. They have fewer moving parts (the main processes take place in the air compressor itself), providing low cost maintenance, and a smaller likelihood of little parts inside the tool wearing out or breaking. They have a low initial cost, and you can operate many tools from one central system, increasing convenience and organization.
First, we have portable, or home, air compressors. These are ideal for home use, as they are easy to transport to different areas in and outside of the house, and don't require a lot of storage space. Despite their smaller size, they are still quite powerful, and can most likely hold up to any project you would be doing at home. They are just the thing for quick inflation of tires and toys, and can also operate air tools. The pressure put out by a home air compressor is much higher than the product of a regular inflator, greatly speeding up the process.
Next, we'll talk about electric air compressors. These convert electric energy into kinetic energy, and like all air compressors, then release the compressed air in quick bursts. One of the main benefits of electric products is the central source of power, and the wide range of places where it's possible to use them. All you need is an electric outlet, and you're ready to go. They are used everywhere- homes, workshops, garages, gas stations and industrial plants, to name a few. Different sizes are available depending on what your main usage of it will be like.
Gas models are perfect if you are without an electrical outlet. They provide essentially the same result as an electric model, but without being tied to any specific location. They are also available in a range of sizes and strengths, making them a good choice for either home use or on the job.
Professional and industrial air compressors are very powerful, and it's doubtful you'd ever need one for a home job. For work sites, though, they are indispensable. The power and speed they provide for jobs and projects greatly increases efficiency, as well as making the work itself much easier.
Apart from types of compressors, there is also a bit of new vocabulary it is helpful to know during your search. You'll often see the abbreviation CFM, which is Cubic Feet per Minute, meaning the volume/amount of air delivered from the compressor to the tool. A higher CFM rating means it provides more air, making it a better choice for longer usage times. PSI is Pounds per Square Inch, or the amount of pressure applied on the tool from the compressor. Paint equipment usually requires about 40-50 PSI, while other tools use around 90-100 PSI. This is an important number to take note of to ensure your compressor has the capacity to run the tools you need it to. A single stage compressor has one or more cylinders. If there are more than one, they are both the same size. This type of product is usually recommended only for operating pressures under 100 PSI. Two stage air compressors, as well as many options of size and capacity make certain that you'll find what you need and be pleased with whatever you choose.
