Home improvement RSS Feed

For anyone who reads the paper or watches the news, it's obvious that the world can be a scary place. We all want to be safe in our own homes, the need to keep our family safe is the number one concern on most people's minds. The good news is that with technological advances it's easier than ever to buy home security alarm to protect you and your family.

Most people can afford some level of home security system, but even the least expensive system won't do you much good if you pick out the wrong type. Before you pull out your checkbook, here are a few things you need to keep in mind:

1. The first thing you'll need to do is determine your budget. Most of the better systems today will offer round the clock monitoring which can be paid yearly, or in most cases, monthly. Take that cost into consideration if you want to include monitoring for your system.

If you go this route, make sure you ask a lot of questions about the company doing the monitoring. For example, what type of training do their employees undergo, what is their procedure if an alarm is tripped, and what kind of background checks do they perform before hiring someone? These are all questions that will let you know how competent the monitoring is.

2. If you choose to go with no monitoring you can go to your local home improvement store and buy many types of motion sensor lights, cameras, and alarms. If you want to go the DIY route, just make sure you take into account the various camera views. It won't do you any good to mount a camera where it's view of the front door is blocked by trees.

Keep that as well as all possible entries to your home into consideration before you decide how many cameras to buy and where to mount them. Don't forget about second floor windows and doors either. Never underestimate the resourcefulness of a burglar, they can climb.

3. Make sure that whatever type of system you get, monitored or DIY, that you fully understand how to operate it. Really take some time to familiarize yourself with it's functions such as turning it off, resetting it if it goes of accidentally, how to reset it if it loses power in a storm, whether or not you will record the camera, etc.

Also take into consideration the best place to mount the keypad, if you have one. Many people will mount the keypad near their front door, but if you come into your home through the garage most of the time, a front door location may not be the best. Take your day to day habits into consideration. You can always have more than one keypad too. This might be a good idea if you have a two story home, you can have one keypad on the first floor and one on the second floor.

There are many things you can do to protect your family and home. It's easy to buy home security alarm and cameras. Take a little time to find out all the options available based on your needs and budget and then get a system that can provide with with peace of mind.
