Brick stain

What is brick staining, exactly?
Brick staining is an entirely cosmetic decision. Its usually employed for a variety of aesthetic reasons. Either to match mismatched bricks to be the same color, or just to color bricks to your own personal style.
It can be considered as an alternative to brick painting, which, oftentimes, can look tacky or ugly. How many times have you seen latex paint peeling off of a brick building and just thought ғEwww! One of the benefits of the brick staining method is that, while paint will usually change the outer texture, leaving a glossy surface, brick staining can be compared more to dying or altering the color of the outer surface of the brick.
Beyond just doing brick tinting for stylistic purposes, brick staining is often employed to cover the marks left by repair jobs (sometimes called brick matching). If you have a new addition to your home or building, you can even use brick staining to give the new area the same, antique look the rest of the bricks have. You can even update brick matching colors and make old brick surfaces look fresh again.
The brick staining process is actually fairly simple. If youԒre not much for painting and handiwork, it can be a good idea to hand the task off to professionals, but if you feel confident in your handyman abilities, you can just buy the materials and go at it yourself.
Of course, we cant recommend that you attempt this without first donning: Thick rubber gloves, a dust mask, and disposable clothing.
Step one
Choose a suitable brick stain from a local shop. You should probably take some well lit reference pictures along to make sure that youҒre getting an accurate shade, or if you can, maybe even a brick. In a plastic bucket or similar ontainer, mix the staining agent with some polyurethane. The polyurethane helps to protect and preserve the staining agent so that the stain will last longer.
Step two
Test the mix, first, on a brick that matches the area you want to stain. If you bring one of these bricks into a hardware store, they would probably be willing to test the stain mixtures before you purchase so you can save a little time and money.
Step three
Read all the instructions on the staining agents container! Some stain mixes have extra steps, such as wiping the excess staining off of the surface, or thinning the staining agent with paint thinner.
Step four
Use a paintbrush to apply the stain to the brick surface. If youҒd like to go for the aged look, use a towel to rub the stain onto the brick. If youre working outdoors or have a large surface to cover, a paint roller or a sprayer can be used, but thatҒs not recommended for smaller jobs, or for most indoor work. Finally, wipe away any big drips before they dry.
And remember, safety first! Try to avoid skin contact or inhaling the fumes. If you have some safety glasses, nows the time to try them out.
