Coronary angioplasty procedure

Heart disease RSS Feed

Coronary angioplasty is a technique used to open block arteries in the heart. Coronary
Angioplasty involves a small incision in the arm or groin to locate an artery. Interventional Cardiologist inserts a thin wire through the incision to the blocked artery. Then, Cardiologist inserts a catheter with a deflated balloon is passed over the inserted wire to the blocked area, once wire reaches the blocked artery.

A balloon catheter is inserted in the same way through which a small amount of dye is injected. The dye helps the cardiologist see the blockage on an angiogram. The effort is to inflate the balloon which is inserted at the blockage part of artery to open the flow of blood. In most of cases, Interventional Cardiologist uses plaque removers to remove deposited plaque from the walls of the artery. After these steps, Interventional Cardiologist implants “stent” to keep the artery open. The stent is permanently fixed at blockage area of artery & almost few hours after implanting stent, the wire and catheter are removed. The time for Coronary Angioplasty procedure may take from thirty minutes to three hours. As it is minimal invasive procedure, the patient is awakening state feels drowsy because of medication given to patient.

The angioplasty procedure has become considerably safer; however, involves certain risks. The following risks involved are recurrence of pain at chest, bleeding from the point of insertion which is usually the groin, bruising, chances of the formation of haematoma, patients having kidney disorders may face problems in the proper functioning of the kidneys. But most common risks are Stent Restenosis, Heart Attack or stroke. Some patient do face problem of side effects of contract dye use which is rare.
