Jaw pain in child-not always easy to diagnose

Health RSS Feed

Unfortunately, with children it can be difficult to properly diagnose pain. They simply are not that advanced to accurately communicate what is going on with them. When there is jaw pain in child the causes can be almost as unique and diverse as the children them self.

Trying to pinpoint exactly what is going on with your child will take patience, calm and probably a trip to the doctor or dentist office.

Many problems we get as adults actually started when we were children but were never adequately diagnosed or treated. To keep your kids healthy now and when they are adults and to make sure they are not suffering, here are some possible causes for all the discomfort (of course, I'm not a doctor and I'm not diagnosing anything, if your child is ill or in pain take them to your doctor for a full evaluation):

1. One very common reason for jaw pain in child is when a child starts to get their adult teeth but they start to come in crooked. When they are just coming in they can actually get lodged into the jaw which can be extremely painful. It can also cause the jaw to become deformed. This situation can be overcome fairly simply by either oral surgery or braces. Sometimes these two things will be done in tandem. Talk to your dentist if you think there is a problem with your child's adult teeth.

2. The jaw can become disfigured either from adult teeth coming in wrong, as in number one above, or because of a serious overbite or under-bite. When the jaw is unbalanced formed it can cause a lot of pain for your child when they are chewing and eating. This issue can be taken care of in the same manner as above.

3. TMJ is an issue that occurs when the temporomandibular joint undergoes some stress, like getting hit in an accident, or it just wears down. This painful condition can actually create pain that travels up to the ears. TMJ can cause lockjaw, clicking of the jaw and swelling. TMJ usually first shows up in childhood and many people will suffer with it throughout their life. The most common treatments for TMJ are pain medications, therapy, heat, bite plates, cortisone and sometimes even surgery.

4. Teeth grinding can either be a sign of TMJ or just something that people start do do when they are under a lot of stress. More often than not, teeth grinding happens when you are asleep. In some cases your dentist may provide you with a bite plate so you don't grind your teeth during the night while you are asleep.

5. Sometimes mumps can cause swelling in the jaw which is very painful.

Keeping kids happy, healthy and free of pain is every parents wish. If you see jaw pain in child your first stop should be your doctor or dentist. Not only can they provide you with an accurate diagnosis and treatment, they may also be able to provide some tips for prevention so your child never has to suffer from jaw pain again.
