One in five adults is living with sleep apnea. Many are living without know they suffer from sleep apnea or form of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The dangers of SDB and OSA are related to your airway and how it affects your ability to breathe. During sleep your airway may narrow, limiting airflow as you breathe, vibrate(commonly heard as snoring) or collapse, so you stop breathing.

What are the warning signs or symptoms of sleep apnea? The warning signs of sleep apnea will vary depending upon your physical condition but you may notice some of the following signs:

Frequent silences during sleep due to breaks in breathing (apnea)
Restless tossing and turning during sleep.
Choking or gasping during sleep to get air into the lungs.
Loud snoring – Almost all people who have sleep apnea snore, but not all people who snore have sleep apnea.
Sudden awakenings to restart breathing or waking up in a sweat
Excessive Daytime sleepiness

What is ResMed CPAP? ResMed CPAP is a treatment for sleep apnea. The most effective and widely accepted treatment for sleep apnea is positive airway pressure therapy (ResMed CPAP). ResMed CPAP does not involve drugs or surgery.

How is sleep apnea treated with ResMed CPAP?The ResMed CPAP bedside device gently delivers pressurized air via a mask to keep your upper airway open. Air is pushed from the flow generator through the tubing and mask. The air then passes through the nose and into the throat, where the slight pressure keeps the upper airway open.

How to live worry free with sleep apnea and ResMed CPAP – Different aspects of your lifestyle may impact your ResMed CPAP therapy. Your daily habits and personal relationships may play a role in the success of your treatment. While it may take time, it’s possible to comfortably integrate ResMed CPAP therapy into your lifestyle. Changes in your daily routine may affect your therapy. Drinking alcohol, gaining or losing weight, or taking medications can cause your pressure needs to change. Check with your doctor to see how your lifestyle might affect your ResMed CPAP therapy, and be sure to tell your doctor about any symptoms or changes.
