What are birth marks - some more serious than others

Health insurance RSS Feed

What are birth marks? Birth marks are any unusual markings on the skin of your child that they are born with. Whether or not these birth marks are caused because the child remained in an awkward position in the womb for a time is unclear. They may or may not eventually fade and some may even go away all together. No one really knows why one child has a birth mark at birth and another child does not.

What are birth marks? Birth marks are usually harmless although some may pose a threat in the form of excessive bleeding of the area is traumatized in some way. Especially the type of birth mark called the port wine stain. The skin covering this area may be more fragile and the blood vessels supplying this area may be thin-walled and fragile, too. If the area gets scraped or cut there could be a lot of blood loss.

Birth marks may be different shapes sizes and colors and may be in inconspicuous places or be in places that are readily seen by all. There are some myths about birth marks that are out there that you may hear if your child is born with a birth mark but none of these myths have ever been proven so there is a lot of doubt surrounding them.

The first myth about birth marks has to do with the reason the baby is born with a birth mark. One out of every ten babies is born with a birth mark. In some circles the belief is held that the birth mark is a sign of good fortune for the baby. In some other circles the belief is held that the birth mark is considered a curse.

How do you know what to believe? Are birth marks caused because you experience fear when you are pregnant? I do not think so because when I was pregnant I went to see a very popular slasher movie and got so scared we had to leave the theater. My son was born without a birth mark. So the fear thing is out the window.

I think the other myths are just silly, too. All pregnant women have cravings, right? Well, one myth tries to make us believe that if you have a craving and touch your belly before you get the thing you crave, your baby will be born with a birth mark. Just sounds silly to me. Or, If there is an eclipse and you touch your belly during the eclipse, your child will be born with a birth mark. Again, very silly. Anyone who would believe such nonsense should do some research and get the facts and not listen to all the superstition surrounding the myths about birth marks.

What are the meanings of birth marks? There are a lot of different meanings and the ones we will start with are all about where the birth mark is on your child's body. For instance, if your child is born with a birth mark on the abdomen it denotes greed. On the back, an open mind. On the chin or right arm, a successful life. Left arm birth marks mean financial difficulties. A right foot birth mark means your child will be a traveler and a left foot birth mark means your child is an intellectual.

What are birth marks? Birth marks are just a part of life and if you are born with one you should consider yourself lucky that you are not just like everyone else. The birth mark has made you different and special.
