Butterfly garden-give yourself a little bit of magic

Gardening RSS Feed

Most of us love the magic and wonder of butterflies. Watching them fly around the yard during the warm summer months is a special treat. If you want to help the process along a little bit you can plant a butterfly garden. By providing the butterflies with all they need, they can become permanent fixtures in your backyard this summer.

Of course, there are different varieties of butterflies and some will be more prevalent in certain areas of the country. Make sure you find what types of butterflies are common in your area and plant your garden with the types of flowers that will attract your native species of butterfly.

If you don't already have a garden you can easily start one. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Pick a spot in your yard that is full sun (gets at least 5 hours of sunlight daily). If you don't have a large yard, that doesn't mean you can't have a beautiful butterfly garden, you can plant your flowers in containers. If you do plant in containers, make sure you use gardening soil and not dirt right from your garden. Also make sure that you add some gravel to the bottom to allow drainage.

2. Try to pick a protected spot where you won't get a lot of wind.

3. Make sure your garden is blooming all during the season. To do that, find a variety of blooming plants that thrive in your climate. Look for plants that bloom at different times throughout the summer so that something is in bloom all the time.

Another thing to consider is finding plants that have a lot of nectar. Butterflies need a constant supply of nectar, if you're not sure which plants fit these criteria, a visit to your local nursery will give you all the answers you need.

Also, flowers with broad leaves are good since it gives the butterflies a platform to land on.

4. It's important to provide the right types of plants for butterflies to lay their eggs on. Plants like milkweed, ash trees, and citrus tress work well for various species of butterflies. Again, you will need to choose the variety of plant that will do well in your climate and with your soil conditions.

5. Be careful that you don't put any pesticides on your garden. If you have any trouble with pests on your plants ask your local nursery what types of non chemical pest prevention you can use that won't harm the butterflies.

6. When you plant your flowers, plant them in "drifts" of plants all in a "bunch' instead of spreading them all around your garden. Keeping them bunched will usually attract more butterflies.

Creating a summer time oasis right in your own backyard by adding a Butterfly Garden can bring you and your family hours of relaxation and wonder. It's really quite easy and if there is anything that you don't know, you can always run to your local nursery and ask.
