Butterfly garden supplies - make a list to get your garden started

Gardening RSS Feed

A butterfly garden is a garden that has the types of flowers that attract butterflies, pretty straight forward. If you want to plant your own garden you will not only need to know just what types of flowers butterflies like, you will also need to know what type of butterfly garden supplies you will need to get.

Obviously, the first thing a good butterfly garden will need are plants that butterflies like. Remember too that there are several species of butterflies so make sure that you find out what species of butterfly you will be attracting so you can specialize in just the right types of flowers for "your" kind of butterflies.

Once you've gotten a list of plants you will need to check to see what the needs of those plants are. Most plants that appeal to butterflies will need full sun. Full sun means a minimum of 5 hours of sunlight daily.

Another important thing to keep in mind before you actually start planting is that butterflies don't weigh a lot, so they don't like a lot of wind. Trying to keep your new garden out of the wind and in a more protected area of your yard is a good idea.

If you don't have enough room to actually have a garden, don't despair, you can still have a container butterfly garden. Just make sure that you buy good quality soil and that the soil is well drained.

One more thing to keep in mind, you don't want to use pesticides on your flowers. These can kill the butterflies. Instead, ask your local nursery for some suggestions on natural pest repellants for use on your flowers.

Ok, now on to the list of butterfly garden supplies that you'll need to start you garden:

1. First things first, you need the flowers. Find the best type of flowers for your climate and for the species of butterflies you want to attract. It's usually a good idea to plant all of your flowers as close together as possible without stunting their growth.

2. A water source is imperative. If possible, invest in a rain barrel so you can recycle rainwater run off. Your plants will like that type of water a lot more than some chlorinated water supply.

3. Compost. Keeping the soil rich is vital if you want your garden to grow. Most soil is depleted of nutrients and your flowers may grow but without rich soil they won't grow as big or as fast.

4. Mulch. This is important because it helps the soil hold in moisture. This will come in really handy when the heat of the summer is upon you.

5. Gardening gloves are always helpful. You can protect your hands from getting scratched and cut and you can keep them clean while you "play in the dirt".

Other than the supplies you would need for a normal garden, they're aren't a lot of special butterfly garden supplies that you will need. Just find the plants and butterflies that are common in your area and go from there.
