Gardening RSS Feed

The Smithsonian Butterfly Garden is an exhibit meant to show the relationship between the butterflies and various habitats. For example, there are four main habitats represented; wetlands, urban, meadow and woods edge. These exhibits provide a "real world" glimpse into the life of the butterflies.

If you ever go to the Smithsonian Butterfly Garden make sure to take note of the various plants, they are all marked with the common name and scientific name for each variety.

Butterflies actually require many different plants for each stage of their development, all of which are represented. The butterflies will need one type of plant on which to lay their eggs and other types of plants to gather nectar from.

The garden also showcases the many different types of plants that you can use to attract butterflies to your garden. This can provide a great inspiration for your own butterfly garden for when you return home!

There are tours available during the day and you can learn more about the life cycle of butterflies. It's exciting to witness the metamorphosis that occurs in the life cycle of a butterfly.

With over 11,000 square feet the garden was created to support the life cycles of butterflies native to the eastern U.S. The garden is located on the East side of the National Museum of Natural History between Constitution Avenue and the National Mall on 9th St. in Washington.

Originally built in 1995 with funds provided by the Women's Committee, the success lead to actually tripling the original size of the garden.

The wetland area of the garden, illustrates the types of plants that would be found in lower lying moist environments. If that describes your backyard you can get some great ideas of the types of plants that would be perfect for you to use to start your own butterfly garden.

Butterflies tend to like puddles and accessibility to moist areas so this environment can be perfect. If you have a very wet area it can sometimes be a challenge to grow plants but a butterfly garden may be just what you've been looking for.

Using these gardens: the wetlands, the meadow, the woods edge and the urban, can help you find the perfect combination of plants to attract butterflies to your yard - no matter where your yard is or what is is.

Having a butterfly garden of your own can not only provide a lot of beautiful plants to keep your summer bright, it can also attract a lot of butterflies which will provide hours of easy summer fun.

When you first strt out making your own butterfly garden, get a little advice from your local garden store. They can tell you what types of plants you will need, how to properly prepare your soil and what natural methods you can use to keep the pesty bugs at bay.

If you get the chance to visit the Smithsonian Butterfly Garden you can get a lot out of the experience. Whether you want to get inspiration for your own butterfly garden, or if you just like looking at the butterflies and plants, either way, you can get a lot out of the experience!
