Butterfly garden accessories

Gardening RSS Feed

Butterflies do more than just look magical as they flutter around your garden, they are also are an important part of a plants life cycle by pollinating. If you want to create your very own practical magical oasis right in your own backyard, there are a few butterfly garden accessories you will want to know about.

Here are a few of the butterfly garden accessories (besides the actual flowers) you will want to consider adding to your garden:

1. A water source is not only very important to your flowers, but butterflies like it too. Adding a small water feature right in your garden can be a great way of attracting more butterflies.

2. Butterflies don't like real windy conditions so try to place your garden in a fairly protected area of your yard. Another thing you can do is provide some shelter right in your garden. Some little area, and this is where you can really get creative, where the butterflies can get out of the sun during the heat of the day and where they can be more protected overnight will add visual appeal to your garden and also make it much more butterfly friendly.

3. Hibernation boxes which can be as simple as an open faced styled birdhouse are also something that can add interest to your garden all the while making it more butterfly friendly.

Of course, making sure you have the best variety of flowers that will attract the specific species of butterflies that are common in your area is of vital importance too. If you are unsure of either what types of butterflies you want to attract, or what type of flowers you should plant to attract them, a trip to your nursery or library may well be in order.

It can be fun to learn about butterflies and flowers so investing in a gardening book or two, one that is geared to your area of the country, might be a fun way to gain some additional knowledge before you actually go out and plant your garden.

Most of the flower varieties that are appealing to butterflies will need a lot of sun so plan your garden accordingly. Full sun means a minimum of 5 hours per day.

Also, if possible, buy a rain barrel so you can capture the runoff rain throughout the summer. That way you will have fresh water to use to water your garden, this works great for vegetable gardens too, so you don't have to pay to water your plants. Another huge benefit is that many municipal water supplies are chlorinated and chlorine isn't the best thing for your plants.

If you have trouble with other types of bugs eating up your flowers, stay away from the use of pesticides. Pesticides can not only kill the butterflies it can also kill off their eggs. Use only natural pest repellants, again, you can find out what is the best type for your area and the specific types of bugs you are dealing with by asking your local nursery.

Have fun creating your oasis with these butterfly garden accessories, it's quite easy and can provide you with hours of enjoyment.
