Round oriental rug as an investment

Furniture RSS Feed

If you want to invest in a beautiful oriental rug for a smaller room than a round oriental rug might be just the perfect size and shape. These rugs are known for their quality of workmanship and they are more like a family heirloom than just a decorative accessory.

'Oriental' rugs are made in many countries such as Turkey, Afghanistan, China, India, Russia, and Iran (which was once called Persia). The rugs are made from either wool or silk and the designs can be quite intricate.

There is a lot of interest in oriental rugs these days, and not just the round oriental rug. For that reason there are also a lot of fakes around and if you're not careful you will over pay for an inferior product.

It's not that easy to distinguish between a fake oriental and the real thing unless you are an expert, but there are some characteristics that you should be aware of. If the rug you are considering purchasing doesn't have these characteristics, it could be a fake. If you're not sure you should enlist the help of an expert. You don't want to get taken advantage of and you also don't want to erroneously label a rug a fake only to find out later that you passed up on a great deal.

Any rug that is over 50 years old is considered an antique and you will pay top dollar for it. Rugs that are less than 50 years old, but more than 10 years old are considered semi-antique and they too will be a little more expensive. A rug that is less than 10 years old is considered to be a new rug and will usually be your best deal.

A true oriental rug is not machine made, they are all hand made. There are some simple ways you can determine whether or not the rug was hand made. For one thing, if the rug cannot be folded up, like a blanket, it is machine made. All hand made oriental rugs can be folded in half than folded again. This is because of the unique hand knotted fibers that make up the rug. Machine made rugs can only be rolled up.

With a hand made rug the fringe will be an extension of the actual rug, with a machine made rug it will be sewn on as a separate piece. One last way to tell the difference between a hand made and a machine made oriental rug is to look at the back of the rug. If it's a hand made rug the pattern will be just as visible from the back as it is on the front.

If you want to compliment the decor in your house by adding an heirloom quality round oriental rug make sure that you know a little bit about the quality of the rug you are buying before you pull out your credit card. If you don't, you may overpay on your new 'heirloom'.
