Canoes prices or only part of the story

Fishing RSS Feed

When it comes to purchasing canoes prices are only part of what you need to take into consideration. Just like when you purchase a car, you will consider the price but you will also consider what you will use it for, what size you need it to be, etc. There are some similar, and very different, things to keep in mind when you are in the market for a new canoe.

If you get the wrong type of canoe for your needs, you will have wasted money... no matter how good the deal was. To avoid doing that, here are some things you should think about before you buy your new canoe:

1. What will you be using your canoe for primarily? Will you just be leisurely cruising up and down your local river or will you be taking it on a lot of trips? Will you be fishing from it, using it as the primary means of transportation on your next camping trip or heading into the back country on an adventure? Taking the time to firm up your plans will help you narrow down the choices of the best canoe for you.

2. If you are looking for a canoe that you can use on your family camping trips you will want a bigger, and more stable canoe than if you are looking for a canoe that you will have to carry overland for great distances. If you want a fast canoe it will be lightweight and designed for speed. A fishing canoe should provide a lot of stability and plenty of room for your gear, and all the fish you catch, again all of this has to be factored in to your canoes prices research.

3. Of course, as with so many things, money will be a factor. Your budget will help determine not only the size of the canoe you get but also the materials it's made out of. Kevlar is quite light and very strong but it's also pricey and expensive to repair. Wood may seem more traditional and beautiful but they tend to be very pricey and a well built wooden canoe will be quite heavy (not what you'd want to lug through the woods).

4. If you are looking for a canoe for fishing you may want to consider a flat hull since they are very stable. For most other applications, though, you are probably better off with a rounded or V shaped hull since they are easier to turn and paddle.

5. And don't forget that unless you live directly on a body of water you will need to transport your canoe. Take the size and weight of the canoe you are considering into account before you actually make your purchase. Buying a great canoe won't do you any good if it's too big to fit on your car and you can't get it to the nearest lake.

Use these tips so that when you are buying canoes prices aren't the only thing you think about. As you can see, there are several things you should consider before making your purchase.
