Check your credit report-keep tabs on your rating

Finance RSS Feed

With this being such a credit-driven society it is important to keep tabs on your rating to make sure that it is ready for you if, and when, you need it. That means that you need to check your credit report on a regular basis to ensure that everything is correct.

Why check your status? Because the big three credit bureaus are in business to sell your information to whoever wants to pay for it. They are not, however, in business to maintain it. When the focus is on sales and not accuracy, things are going to fall apart. If accuracy is not going to make you any money, then why focus on it? That’s why it is up to you to maintain the right information.

The most obvious question is how often to check up on your file. While there is no right or wrong answer, most experts will recommend at least once a year. This gives you time to catch a new error before it becomes established on your record. Plus, the quicker you realize that something on your file is erroneous, the easier time you will have getting it removed or modified.

Once you find an error, and yes, you will eventually find one, it is imperative that you take action immediately. Credit bureaus have their own guidelines on how often they update files. It could be as little as once every 30 days. And that’s after you have brought it to someone’s attention and they verify that it needs to be corrected. So timing is very important. Getting to work on it might take some time and the last thing you want is to need it removed and it still hasn’t been rectified.

In this process, you want to make sure that everything is in writing. If you speak to someone that verifies it as a mistake, get it in writing. If someone promises to take action to have it removed, get it in writing. And once it has been corrected by the lender or company and the credit bureaus promise that it will be removed, get it in writing.

The main reason behind why you should check your credit report is so there are no surprises. If you are applying for credit, this is not the time to find out that you have an error on your file. You want this to be taken care of in plenty of time so that not only is the listing removed, but also to make sure that your rating will have sufficient time to rebound and rise back up to its appropriate level.
