Making money online is becoming a more and more attractive idea as the economy gets worse and worse. One of the more popular ways of earning money on the internet is through what's known as affiliate marketing.

This is where you sign up to sell someone else' product and they pay you a certain amount for every sale you make. They are the vendor and you are the affiliate, hence the term. Some affiliates get paid a flat rate, while others get paid a percentage. It's also possible to earn more than the average affiliate if you reach certain sales targets.

The big benefit of affiliate marketing is that the product has already been created. You don't have to do the research, don't need to make the product, and don't even have to write any of the sales materials in many cases. The beauty of this arrangement is that you can start selling right away.

One of the tricky parts of affiliate marketing is finding good products. Unfortunately, you can't always go by what the sales page says. It may sound like the ideal product, but remember, you will be the one selling it as an affiliate, so it's up to you to make sure it meets your standards of quality. While your main focus may be on making as much money as possible, you still need to have a clean conscience when doing so.

You have three choices when it comes to checking product quality.

1. Buy them yourself. This is by far the best way to find products for affiliate marketing. Buy them as though you were just another customer. There will be no way for the product vendor to know you plan on becoming an affiliate, so they won't treat with special care (not that they would, but you never know). Even more important, it will give you a chance to test the entire buying process from your first visit on the site to downloading the product.

2. Ask for a review copy. There is a chance that the vendor does not give out review copies, but you will increase your chances if you explain your affiliate marketing plans and do so in a polite and professional way. Keep in mind that the vendor may be extra nice to you, so you may not get an accurate picture of how they treat a regular customer, but at least you will be able to look the product over before you start selling it.

3. Read reviews written by other people. A lot of people take this shortcut, but it is the least effective way of choosing good product for affiliate marketing. The problem with affiliate product reviews is that far too many of those reviews are being written by people who are trying to sell the product. In other words, it's in their best interest to downplay the negatives of the product, and to highlight the positive aspects of it. But even if you find bad reviews, there's a chance they were written by people selling a competing product. So, it may not be the best way to choose a product, but it's better than nothing.
