Mass email marketing-no not spam

Email marketing RSS Feed

Today people are very aware of spam. Some people, unfortunately, mistake mass email marketing with spam.

There is a world of difference between the two. One is absolutely acceptable and a great way to do business online (mass email) and the other is obnoxious and if you are caught you are likely to get booted off of your ISP (spam).

So, you might be asking, what is the difference between spam and a
mass email marketing campaign? Simple, with one (mass email) you have been given permission to contact them and with the other (spam) you have not been given permission to contact them and you are likely annoying them.

You are given permission to contact someone when they actively sign up for your email list. They can do this in a few ways but one of the most common is to add an optin form to your website and offer them something that they want if they sign up.

When they sign up they will get an email confirmation that they must click on to verify that they want you to send them emails. This is called a double opt in; they didn't just optin once by signing up on your web form, they are opting in a second time by clicking on the link in the verification email they get.

If all this sounds like work, don't worry, it is totally automated with a system called an autoresponder. There are many autoresponder services available online today and they vary in price from free (or a free trail) upwards depending on the features they have. They are very inexpensive even for a new business with a limited budget.

To get the most out of all the emails you send there are some rules you need to follow:

1. Never forget that every email you send through your auto responder service has an "unsubscribe" link in it. That means that anyone receiving your emails can just click on the link and they will be taken off the list and won't receive any more emails from you. That isn't what you want to happen so you have to keep them happy.

2. To keep them happy don't turn into a pushy salesperson. Don't make every email you send nothing but a commercial trying to get them to buy something. Instead give them tips, tricks, secrets, tutorials. In short, give them something that will help them. Share your experience and knowledge.

3. OK, now you might be wondering, "well, if I can't sell anything to the people on my list, why make it in the first place? How does a list help me? Good question, a list helps you because you will sell things to the people on your list it just won't be all the time. Instead of you acting like a greedy child demanding their money, you will give them a lot of value before you ask for anything. You will give before you try to get. It's really all about balance. No one said you shouldn't try to make sales I just said not to make that the only purpose of your email list.

Mass email marketing is a great method to make money, just make sure you use it properly.
